MusicMan Monday!!

Whatsit like?

I have it strung with La Bella Mustang Flats and I absolutely love it. Between the string thru bridge, adjustable thumbrest, adjustable mutes, short scale, active electronics, what's not to love? I had a Starry Night passive short scale and sold it a short time after this arrived. It's everything I ever wanted in a Stingray and more!!

Those are all awesome looking. I'm not huge on bursts but that fretless stirling looks great with that fretboard (is that pao ferro?). Really, each of those basses has something unique going on. The big al with rosewood neck, the bongo with figured maple neck instead of the usual painted neck, and the ray with matching headstock. So nice.

Thanks! Yes, the Sterling has a lined pao ferro board, which the prior owner had coated with epoxy. I'm not a fretless player but that bass is awesome. Lots of birdseye on the neck as well. The Big Al of course is out of production, and I love the all rosewood neck. I used to have a Big Al 4H, which was cool, but since I had two other EBMMs with a single H I decided to try the SSS, and no regrets on that move. The Bongo is the neptune blue PDN with mahogany body, roasted maple neck, and HSp pickups, none of which are currently available options from EBMM. The 30th Anniversary Ray was great too, but I didn't play it much and sold it to try something totally different (Dingwall NG2 5 string).

No more calls... We have our winner.
Does a flake paint job add much weight to a bass? Between primer, base coat, flake, and coats of clear top coat, would it add 1 lb or more?

I'm looking for a SR that's just like my 83' but weighs 8 1/2lbs. or less.
That would be 1 5/8" nut, alnico pup and 2-band pre.
What years (if any) did they make US. light weight, versions of these?

Did you guys check out the new DarkRay bass? It has a built-in fuzz by Darkglass electronics. Really interested in how this bass feels and sounds.

Below 8.5lbs is a challenge for the pre-Specials StingRays.

I have 1989 at that weight and a 1987 that’s 8.6lbs (both 2-bands). My lightest is a 2007 3-band at 8.2lbs.

Difficult to find for any year but they do exist.

As for the nut width - apart from the SLO Specials which are 1.5”, EBMM StingRays (at least in the pre-Special years) are generally 1 11/16” at the nut (although the spec always said 1 5/8”).
