I am right for EBMM 5 HH ALNICO.

H For the classic Stingray Tone, and a bunch of other bad ones

HS- For all you JBass/Stingray Lovers, its like the two have had a baby, a freackn awesome and kinda rare baby

HH- Stingray with balls

If you want that Stingray tone, you want the humbucker in the sweet spot, as on the single humbucker model. That's what I have on my MTD and it's great.

Just FYI, the bridge humbucker is in the same position on all StingRays and Sterlings. Even the dual pickup models. Not so on the Bongos.

This is a really, REALLY hard question for me. I own all 3 of these basses and would rather part with a limb than any of them. The single H I have is the first MM bass I ever laid physical eyes on and the first one I ever played. Been my main bass for 5 years. Although the HH and HS do see a lot of gig time because they're just so dang versatile.

You can't go wrong with any of them.

I like the single H. The neck pickups on MM basses are too wide for the string spacing (the strings never line up with the center of the pole pieces), and that bugs me.

I vote HS... The SC 2nd pickup will give you the added tonal options w/o the neck HB getting in the way of thumpin'.

And for me the SR tone is big enough, having both HB's full on is almost too much - but that's coming from a J kinda guy so I don't know if my opinion should really count.

IMO, the other sounds from the HH or SH just don't really sound as good as the straight up single humbucker tone.

I went with the HH 20th Ann. Stingray. Haven't picked up any of my other basses since it arrived. If you've seen Ed Friedland demonstrate this model you'll have to agree it is something special. He hits the B and says "Hammer of the God's"..........Yep! Bud B

I think StingRays with pickguards and 2 pickups look goofy. The BFR basses look goofy the other way around, though.

And I have a single H, which must count for something...

H all the way. The single MM tone is what the Stingray mojo is all about. There are lots of dual pickup basses out there, many are lighter, smaller, whatever - but nothing sounds like a single pickup 'ray.

Also, I think the pickups look a little obnoxious up by the neck.

Personally, I like the HH so I can add a little roundness to the agressivness when the situation calls for it, but if you want the classic stingray tone, H hands down

You're both right depending on what year dual pickup SR5 you're looking at.
The ones built from '05 to early '08 are wired in series and have ceramic pickups. The new '08 version is now build like the SR4 with parallel and alnico magnets (because the Sterling5 takes over the series and ceramic)

Now with that said, I do own old preEB and EB Stingray's. I have bought a few single H SR5's over the years, but I could never fall in love with the sound...to me it didn't represent the same as what I got out of SR4's. It always seemed lacking to me in the booty department
When I got my first HH, I fell in love, and all the booty I was looking for was there.
Now granted I have not tried a new '08 single H SR5 yet, only because I know my next SR5 purchase will be one of the 20th anniversaries.

Well, I pulled the triger and got one AWESOME '08 Alnico single H. Couldn't be happier.

The HH models sound a little boomy to me. I prefer my H model it cuts through the mix great and sounds great on its own. There is plenty of low end to go around.

I only have ray35 but I love to upgrade to stingray5 HS model.
I like the slap sound with HS combined. And S is usuable sound by itself too IMHO.
Lots of tone varietions.
