Okay, so spots #100 and #153 are open to the next people that join!

Kamikaze, ever thought about a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]? They're the overseas version of the Stingray, but I've played a couple and was impressed both times. Good build quality, good sound, looks like a Stingray but comes with significantly less damage to your wallet.

Fair enough! A couple tips then:

Decide what you want now (colors, options, etc). It helps to have a goal in mind. Always remember that what you want may be a special order, but I don't believe EB charges more for custom orders... anyone know for sure?

Watch for GC sales. I got mine over last President's Day and they were running a 15% off sale. No small chunk of change, I saved $256.

Most GC's don't haggle on price (the one I bought my Stingray from didn't anyway, but that clerk was a d*ck), but don't be afraid to ask for little stuff. When buying a $1700 bass, IMO they could at least throw in a strap, maybe a new set of strings. That clerk lost any future business from me over a $30 strap that probably cost them $10. And I'm a gear wh*re, too bad for him.

Last tip... start a 2nd checking account. I've found that I put money in my 2nd account and it's "out of sight, out of mind." Pretty soon, you'll have enough for your Stingray!

It's a '94 that I bought brand new, the first bass that I actually bought after playing on borrowed basses for 3 years.
I recently installed a Duncan Stingray preamp, and I really like it. Not as zingy with more bottom.

It's got a birdseye neck, but the eyes aren't that big and pronounced.

Guys-- those are some SWEET looking MM basses. I got my first MM bass about a month ago ( Sterling HS 4 Natural Ash with Maple) and about two weeks after that I picked up a used Sting Ray HH 4 Graphite Pearl with Rosewood.

I think the build and playability of an EBMM bass is a step above Fender. One can tell how Leo knew the shortcomings of the Fenders in the 70's and set about doing it right. Leo was the man. Ernie/ and now Sterling are doing a great job producing guitars that are just plain good. You don't really have to wonder what you are going to get when you buy one.
Not like Fenders where you are taking a chance alot of the time of getting a "dud" guitar. Believe me I've had alot of dud Fender basses.

I still like Fender basses and I just got a USA Daphne blue one the other day. Don't get me wrong. There are some good Fender basses out there .

I played my Sterling the other night on an outdoor gig. The thing just sounded like the Chariots of the Gods coming down from above!
The StingRay goes to the next gig.

I can tell I'm going to have a long relationship with the EBMM basses--just don't tell my wife okay?:D

Hey I just read your post on the last thread. Sorry that I did not respond. I never saw it for some reason? In any event, My wife is doing okay. The chemo is really kicking her butt right now but she is fighting through it. She has 2 more treatments and then she is done. September 27th is her last one. Thank you for asking about her!

As far as the bass goes, I got it in the beginning of July and love it! It plays like a dream and sounds incredible. Here are some pics of it.

No worries! I'm glad to hear about your wife, good that it's coming down to the end of the chemo! Pass on best wishes from Talkbass!

I'm sure others will agree that the pickguard on that Stingray is very meaningful and looks great! Well done!!!

Nice recommendations 5sg, thought I'd share my opinion aswell. About these Sterling rays...they are quite good, but it will never feel as the real thing. I think it should be judged how much money you can put aside and if a real one is definitely out of reach one could consider the Sterling one.

As for the color scheme recommendation, depending on the location of the person it can be really hard to stick to your preference. New Stingrays cost around double of what they go for in the second hand market, and usually for great second hand deals you really do not get to be picky :)

I bought the first SR5 I ever saw on sale in Estonia (and after 4 years I've yet to see one for lower price in here and the neighbour countries - there actually have been only 2-3 on sale in Estonia during these 4 years!, but one pops out every 2-3 weeks in Finland). For price comparison, SR5 cost around 2100 EUR new in Europe, I got mine for 1150 EUR.

I consider myself very lucky to get a color scheme I liked (translucent teal, black pearloid pickguard and maple fretboard).

The SR is a lifetime investment for me. It is a great bass for metal and harder rock I mostly play now. If I grow older, it will still work fantastic for any funk/pop stuff I might get more into. The only bass I have had for many years and at the moment I seriously doubt it will ever leave my hands.

Thank you for my number!

Yes they are Status necks, where I live there are wild fluctuations in humidity and temperature and the constant action tweaking was driving me nuts!

I also ordered them with an extra 22nd fret and they both have Ultra lite tuners, so I've shaved a bit off their weights too.

This IS a very inspiring post.
