Muting with the fretting finger itself

John Patitucci uses this technique, too In a video he says he didn't even know he was doing it until a student pointed it out. He might have picked it up from Rocco.

Danny Mo Morris does this as well. You can watch him doing it here in this clip and just see how much more movement it requires when you are fretting basically all of your notes with the first finger and just moving it around.

I deleted my post about Patitucci because I misread. He actually mutes with the spare fingers of his plucking hand, not his fretting hand. My apologies.

Technique has a name, "left hand muting?" classical guitarists use It often, I saw Joe Pass use It playing Jazz and explain It in a video too, developed the technique trying not to wake people up as a kid lol.
Can be used fast at guitar but a little slower at bass.
Another variation is fretting with index, muting with middle finger, for one note at a time grooves. I saw this being used a lot.

Do you maybe have a link to that Joe Pass video? Really curious how he uses this. Thanks.

Fretting right on the frets allows you to control the tone, more than actually mute the notes. In combination with where you pluck the string and how your right hand fingers slide across the strings you can get a wide range of tones. That is why many people say that tone is in your hands. Just experiment and listen. Eventually it will become second nature to get the tone in your head.
