MXR bass effects really impressing me..

The BCD made the cut for me on my reinvented tiny pedalboard, after I sold off everything from my huge one in a fit of frustration. That was a couple of years ago and it is still here! I actually use the flanger function more than the chorus specifically for that kind of trippy 70s effect. And I like the fact that it has a crossover so I don't get nauseated...

I did have an MXR M169 Carbon Copy Delay on the old one which I sold, but only because it was getting dusty because I never really used it. It was a fine pedal.

Yes, it's a funny thing about the MXRs (not only the Bass pedals)

I got four of 'em on my board at the moment (the new Bass distortion, Phase 90, Carbon Copy and the smaller new Bass Preamp) and while they're not "outrageous" pedals (like, say, my beloved Fairfield Unpleasant Surprise or the POG2) they're doing what they do in the most solid benchmarky kind of way.

OP here. I luv's me my Phase 90 and Badass 78 Distortion. I use those two as a loop on my true bypass looper. The 78 into the 90 sounds amazing. Seriously considering the Modified O.D next. So I guess I have to say that not only are the bass effects impressing me, but so are the guitar pedals when used with bass.

So your chain is the Darkglass into the Smoothie into the Chorus? Nice combo man. Why did you choose to chain those pedals that way, as opposed to comp first or chorus first?

IIRC, when I set it up I believe I was trying to get the most dynamics out of the B3K possible via an uncompressed input signal, then quite literally smooth that out a bit so you end up with something like a tube hitting its limits (softly.) Then I can add chorus or (more often) flanger at the end to that rounded-off signal.

To be fair: They don't intend to be "outrageous", they're just pretty much doing what it says on the box in an awesome way.

Then again, I haven't been able to reproduce the warm and weird echo-wonderland that is the Carbon Copy (internal pots cranked) with other pedals. Especially the grain of the repeats seems very pleasing to me.

Currently using the Bass Octave Deluxe>Bass Fuzz Deluxe>Bass Envelope Filter all in a tiny Saturn true bypass loop. One click turns all 3 of them on, and is one of the fattest, wettest synth tones I've ever heard. I previously owned a Markbass Super Synth, Ehx Bass Microsynth, Boss SYB-5, and other various combinations of pedals to achieve this same sound.
The MXR pedals do it better, imo.

Totally. The synth pedals let you play the same octave, but for synthy tones, nothing beats an octave down into distortion and/or envelope filter IMHO. Synth pedals...I don't know. Sometimes they're cool but most of the time I can get a better sound with the octave down, although I still cling to my trusty OC-2 instead of the BOD. One of these days, but I've been on a crazy pedal buying jag and it's time to rein it in a bit :D

I've been really impressed with MXR's offerings as well. I have a P90, BOD, BEV and BCD. Considering a Carbon Copy too, but I already have a bunch of delay options so I've been holding out.

I do something very similar. I use the BOD > BEV in a loop for my basic synth tone. I may add in the B3K and / or some modulation with the P90 or BCD depending on the song too.

The BOD and BEV play great together! I also much prefer to get a synth tone this way than with an all-in-one "synth bass" pedal. Most of the ones I've heard sounded a little cheesy to me.

Does the Carbon Copy or Phase 90, since they are guitar pedals suck out any low end? Just curious on that as I had to deal with that when I used a RAT pedal.

I'm slowly putting together a small board. I'd like either a delay or Verb, a clean boost and maybe a couple others.

Well the Carbon Copy surely doesn't. It just lets your clean signal through, while the repeats have been cold by some as rather "dark" sounding, which is true in a way. But I like it's murky, grainy quality a lot. MXR have released a special edition CC (aptly named "Carbon Copy Bright") to help those out who didn't like it. But well, it's an analog delay and the name "Carbon Copy" is rather fitting. The repeats of a digital delay will always be more like an exact copy of what you initially put in. And it's sparkly. And it can also make a nice roomy faux chorus kind of thing.

The Phase 90 (being a Phaser) will of course make your signal a little unstable (it's a modulation effect after all), but the so called "Block Logo" Phase 90 (the standard cheapest one) seems to have a little tiny signal boost, which seems to help with basses. At least I felt it helped the signal to cut through better than the Phasers in my Eventide H9 or even the EHX Small Stone (but maybe it worked out better for others). And it's orange.

Great, thanks - thats good detail.

In case you desperately want tap tempo and analogue, the Way Huge Supa Puss is also pretty close to the CC (it has also got the modulation controls on the outside). Engineered by the same guy who engineered the CC (or participated). But it's bigger and at least the early versions were quite prone to oscillation (heard they fixed that).

+1 on Phase 90 adding a volume boost and also doing something to the EQ to make it cut thru more when engaged. I love my Phase 90 on bass and now I know why everyone tries to copy it.
