MXR Compressor only showing gain reduction for slap/pop

Even when I'm using an 18v active bass on full volume with the Input knob on the pedal all the way up (only for experimentation, I don't normally have it set like that). Is something wrong or am I just that big of a compression noob?

Doesn’t sound right, I am getting gain reduction with active bass on full volume, gently finger picking, when the input knob is around 2-3 o’clock. Have you tried another bass ?

Yep try another bass, another cable, maybe another power supply / battery for the pedal too ?
