I think he says all you need to say.
The need to work on any new material - including techniques - should go without having to be spelt out. No?

I guess to me he makes it sound like anyone with a bass and this pedal (of course) can sound like the O'Jays in 5 seconds. I find his technique description to be oversimplified (my opinion, of course). He does, however, nail that song's tone. Cheers!

My 2 cents is save your $ and get a Walrus Audio Polychrome. I own it and WA basically turned their Julia into an Electric Mistress.

Thanks for the suggestion, however it's 40 euros more and it seems like a lot of knobs in comparison to the Deep Phase, that probably means it's a lot more versatile, but since I'm a phaser noob it might be best for me not to start to enthusiastically.

If we're talking phasers, wouldn't the Walrus Lillian make more sense?

I haven't tried the Deep Phase myself but if any firm out there understands what it takes to make a great phaser, MXR is sure to be at the top of the list.

While I will agree there is a difference, they can cover the same ground when done right. The Lillian is outstanding, I'm sure, but I have no experience with that pedal. Maybe I'm sipping Chardonnay with my pinky finger out, but I'm not an MXR fan. In my opinion, they are just meh.

That's cool man. I'm not a huge MXR fan either, but you can't have a conversation about phasers without them being mentioned. I have several versions of the Phase 90 circuit, either built by other companies or by myself, which are all superior to the ones MXR is building these days. I did modify a stock MXR with matched transistors, the Script mod and a rebias though. It definitely makes it more comparable to the boutique clones.

Not terribly familiar with the Polychrome either. I have heard it mentioned on more than one occasion that it is the same pedal as the Julia but with a wider delay. Not sure if this is true or not, though. I'd love to test drive one!

Maybe try the MXR Script ‘74 reissue. I have one and it sounds great for that O’Jays tone.
