Looks like a mid 1980's Japanese Cort... I had a late 80's one from when they got rid of the micro tilt. If you take the neck off it should say either "Made in Japan" or "Crafted in Japan" and have some sort of date on the neck heel.

Yeah, I'll check that when I replace the strings. I thought Cort was always a Korea-based company though:

I gather that Cortez=Japanese and Cort=Korean but if you've got other sources I can read I'd really like to see them. Just because a well-written person posts an article on Answers.com doesn't make it the truth. There's a massive flow of misinformation on the internet, and I attempt to navigate it best I can. I've had three Cort guitars between me and my daughter's. Excellent bang for the buck. Still have two of them (they no longer get gigged but have done many in the past) and regret the one i did sell although it went to a youngster so that's cool.

Yeah, people rip on them a lot but I like my Cort. And they make a good toaster oven, too.

Cort is one of those brands whose marquee is used to sell on too many price points. In the US we don't really get many of the higher ones but I have a GB4 that came equipped with hipshot hardware, Seymour Duncan preamp and pickups, neutrik locking jack, blocks and binding, and a spalt maple top. They retail for under a grand new and I'd wager they beat out most things under $1600.

I had a Cort Curbow about 10 years ago, a very nice bass to play, as a lot of Korean products with some different and innovative technology, in that case the body done in a syntherized material called luthite, not in wood. Is the red bass on my avatar...

as far as buzzing not related to fret buzz...check the bridge saddle screw springs. you can stuff some soft foam under the springs to quickly check if they are adding to or the source of the buzz.

I may be mistaken but I think the relationship is much closer than that, aren't the Squier VMs made by Cort in Indonesia? If so, then by way of that I have 2 cort made guitars in my stable. To me it's more like a son-in-law than a second cousin.

Buzzing, not fret related- Check all the screws and springs.
My P bass had new and mysterious buzz this past week, turned out to be the set screw in one of the knobs.

I also agree that that is probably the original pickguard that has been painted. The marks near the pickups is likely player wear or damage to the plastic from the paint.

Buzz/rattle could also be the truss rod or the tuners, but check the bridge adjustment screws first.

The old Peavey Fury also has the neck tilt screw and is a similar P-based bass. The manual has a good guide for setting it up. Nice score!

BTW, my Austin Hatchet bass was made by Cort. I love it!

I think I know where it got its name. It looks like someone took a hatchet to a Mockingbird.

I was just talking about brands/labels. I meant that you would think, ideally, a Fender guitar would be made by Fender, in America since Fender is originally an American company. For someone to say "a Japanese Fender Made by Cort in Korea" is too many places/adjectives in my opinion, to describe a guitar that really should have been made in the USA to begin with, if only companies weren't so worried about pinching pennies.
Since these products are all made to the specs of the contracting company I personally don't think it matters much WHERE they are made, but rather how.
When you think about it though, back in the 50s/60s I doubt any Fender employee would have thought such a statement would ever exist. A "Japanese Fender made by Cort in Korea." It just seems "off" hearing a statement like that.
You'll have to forgive me any inaccuracies in my statement, I'm new to all this and I'm not very knowledgeable about guitars, I just thought it sounded a bit alien and... well, unexpected, and weird.

Yeah, now that I've broken the truss rod I suppose it will be rattling from the inside...
I adjusted the neck tilt to make up for the new perma-bow. Far from perfect but good enough for me. Thanks for the reply, I'll be testing every inch of this bass for rattles.
