My $40 Craigslist Find!

Found this today on CL. I believe it is an Ibanez. Someone did a hack paint job on it with a spray can. It is an active bass but the output is low. I tested the battery and it is ok so I'm not sure what is going on with it yet. For $40 I figure it is worth it just for the parts! The neck is straight, truss rod works and the frets in very good shape. I already have it totally apart with the body and neck taking a Citristrip bath in the garage! Will post pics as the restoration progresses.

Might be wrong, but I think that's one of the earlier Japanese models.......but I'm surely not an expert....

Either way....a playable bass for $40 is a deal!! Even if it is yellow....

It is much worse in person! Lots of drips and runs from a rushed rattle can job. School bus yellow is really not my color either.:) I already have it sprayed with Citristrip and waiting for the first layer to come off!

After starting the strip job on the neck I found "SR640-02" stamped on the neck heel. So I did a search for SR640 and found this:

Progress so far. I'm through the yellow paint on the body and the neck is entirely stripped. There are some spots of discoloration in the neck wood so I don't think I'll be able to just do an oil finish on it. The body has a layer of white and then a layer of black underneath the yellow. The original color was IMO a very nice metallic purple, which by the way is almost identical to the color of my PT Cruiser! I already found and auto body paint supply that has that color in spray cans if I want to take it back to near original color!

Yeah, I contacted the guy pretty soon after he had listed that bass and was set to pick it up...until I asked him if the electronics worked. He emailed me back saying he plugged it into a guitar amp and was getting no sound. I told him to replace the battery (I knew from the looks it looked identical to my late 80's sr800), I knew it was active. He never emailed me back so I assumed that there was something wrong with the pre. If you put a good finish on it and replace the pre it will be a great bass for a good find. I really didn't need another project, so good luck!

So I have been working on this some in what little spare time I have. The body has been sanded, primed and painted. The nick has been stripped, sanded and oiled with numerous coats of Tru-Oil. The front of the headstock has been painted to match the body. Still have final coats of paint plus sanding to do on the body.
