My '75 didn't.
late 70's/eary 80's jazzes have that neck pickup route. i would guess that shelf routed in the control cavity started sometime in late 79/early 80 as well.

My '75 didn't.
I looked up some other 77 - 79 J's and most of them had the oval cut neck pup route.

Call me a savage, but I liked the paint on it. I trust it wasn't the original finish (in '78 I don't think they offered anything like that color) so this isn't quite a 'bass crime'...

Pics coming VERY soon as the body is finished and I loaded the hardware. I took her to my luthier to install a new bone nut and to giver her a setup. Should have her back in the next few days.
These projects are almost as much fun to read about as they are to do! Looking forward to the pics, Quad!
OK folks, just got her back. I ran out during my lunch break and picked her up. Took some crappy cell phone pics here at the office.
I didn't mind the original color either and I am partial to a natural finish on a fine ash body; but the LPB with the pearloid pickguard and blocks is a great combination - stunning.

Beautiful. Very nicely done. I'm usually not partial to the block inlays on maple, but on this one it definitely works. Congrats.
I believe it was a 3 piece as I recall, but the grains on each piece of ash did not match well with each other and was such labeled as a "B" body at the factory (stamped "B" in the neck pocket) which means it got painted instead of natural or burst.
