The Army uses Kilometers & meters. I guess it's just easier for the math when shooting the big guns. I dunno.
It is interesting to see the war from the soldiers perspective rather than the news'.
I have been watching a program called "Our war" that uses footage actually filmed by soldiers in Afghanistan and it is a great insight into the lives of the soldiers.
If you can get it in the US I suggest you watch it if you are at all interested.

That's all I was able to get, I'll keep trying.
For those of you who have seen the movie "Restrepo", (and those of you who haven't I strongly recommend you do!) these pictures were taken in the Korengol Valley. Our 1-26 Infantry Battalion (3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry, I'm in the Big Red One) replaced the guys in the movie (173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade, don't know the Battalion that was up there). I made a few trips up there during my first deployment and these pictures are a testament to just how mountainous the north-eastern part of this country is.
P.S. I guess the internet is being cooperative this morning but I'm only doing 2 at a time.
I thought Restrepo was an amazing movie. I thought that the first picture in the Korengal looked familiar.

I posted something on page 3 about this. If there is anything further that you would like to know just ask but please be a bit more specific.
Here's some more for ya!
Out in the middle of nowhere. Current deployment.
Again current deployment. Overlooking a valley in our area.
These are 82mm recoil-less rifle rounds. These are what they shoot at our COP (COP = Combat OutPost). They go BOOM! I hide in a bunker.
Me, exhausted, hot, sweaty and generally miserable. I was carrying my heavy dismounted radio instead of the smaller one I use when we drive for mission.
Obviously I was able to get a few more. It turns out that Flickr wanted to cooperate this morning, I'll try again tomorrow morning to see if it's a morning thing.

Here's an off the wall question for you about some of the equipment - I have a bud who served and he often really complains about some of the gear issued. He utterly hated ACU's, saying they made the guys stick out like a "fart in church" (I see you're in multicams) and his M4 felt like a BB gun sometimes when trying to engage enemy at a distance. Do you agree with that or is it really just a personal preference thing?
