my Audere preamp experience

I've played the U-retro and it wasn't for me. The high end is noisy and the eq is too extreme for my tastes. I will say though that for that Marcus Miller sound you may possibly not want to go with the Audere. The Audere preamp is not going to boost the eq in any extreme way. You may want to just look into a good two band preamp like the Sadowsky, Aguilar, etc.... Others may feel differently, and I can't say enough about the Audere, but it might possibly be too subtle for what you're looking for.

This will be my Second bass with Chris. Thanks for the input.......I will talk it over with Chris, and I have no doubt, that he will do a great job. Chris sure knows his stuff and I trust his input.

with all due respect to John,John's J-retro He is basically working on filtering

the J-retro
Treble boost is at 3K Hz where his cut is at 1K Hz

Bass boost is a 50 Hz this is a boost only control
as you add move bass the frequency goes downward

Mid control is a dual stacked knob
You can vary the frequency from 150 Hz to 3K Hz
You can vary the level +/- 12 dB

He has a bright switch +8 dB at 7 KHz

He has an active blend

He has a blend disable to set both pickups to equal

He has an active/passive switch

He offers black, chrome, and gold



The Audere offers

A Z-Mode switch
this changes the loading on the pickups to 3 different settings (John uses 100K like center mode)

The blend is Active

Treble boost/cut of 10 dB at 3K Hz shelving

Bass boost/cut of 10 dB at 100 Hz shelving

Mid is boost/cut of 8 dB at 500 Hz

Battery meter LED

Audere offers chrome only

In general John swings his tone control much more extremely than Audere does.
John always adds some bass boost - even when the control is set to the min (like Bart does at flat). In addition he knows most people will run the bass in the center detent which is a lot of boost.
John is working on filtering to make the bass easier to drive. So he has 1 control which moves both the level and frequency. His sweepable mid control is cool.while
Audere is working on pickup loading and how this changes the sound.

The Audere and The J-retro are like Apples and Oranges,both great products.

Remember as I noted in post #1 of this thread there are caps that you can use with The Audere Preamp that you can use to alter the sound of the preamp.

With standard Fender pickups,no caps and a maple fretted bass neck the sound can be just too biting for 90% of players without some extra capacitance.The standard caps are selected to leave plenty of bite for most players but not to be too far over the top. The caps are 330 pF for the neck and 680 pF for the bridge. For a fretless, you can pull the caps (or insert smaller caps) and get a higher frequency to the High Z-Mode peak.This can add more "bite" if the frequency peak does not exceed the range of the player’s cabinets.The ideal caps also change with pickups - for example Nordstrand adds more capacitance in his pickups because of how he winds his coils - so you might not want any caps in the sockets.Barts can range from standard Fender to pickups which have very little wound in capacitance - so one might want a larger cap depending on type.The caps only affect the High Z-Mode sound.(the standard Audere preamps have a cool 11 turn adjustment to do this but the cost is too high for this price point).Audere will sell (as an option for about $15 extra) bags of 10 different caps players can tryout.Players can also install there own caps - should create some "special secret" cap recipes.

I probably will order an Audere and pop it into my
Lakland 55-02.See how it does and if I don't like it, I will save it for a project bass down the road. Thanks for taking the time and I really liked your google video and website is cool too. I guess you have answered the question of "How low can you go !!!!" C# is REAL low

Thanks for your impressions. Do you think that a setup with just the Z switch, blend and two tone controls (one for each pickup) would give a good amount of variety (for a bass with two dual coils and pickup switching, let say)? I might go for the active pre, but the simpler setup is appealing. I posted this in the other Audere thread too.

I personally feel because the Audere J-Z3 is so well thought out and that it really has a high end studio quality presence to it that with the optional pack of 15 tone altering caps(that you can install yourself)I'm sure that if you were to go thru each one you would come up with a killer sounding Bass,plus I think the guys at Audere could make the system that you described.The prices that Audere is now offering for it's systems can't be beat for such a quality product and with all due respect I have heard and use my share of Preamps and I am the first to say that if the Audere pre or any pre is giving us that sometimes alluring tone then that is all that should matter.

The tone altering cap option is a nice one! I'm probably getting some version of the Audere, just have to figure out which one. I'll ask David Meadows some questions too of course.

Hi All

I do post on talk bass from time to time but I try not to "push" my products in the threads. I think of TB as a user's forum and not as a supplier's forum...

I will of course be happy to answer any questions etc.

I tend to stay busy designing more products ;) but I will try and check in more often.

Well, Dave, if there is any justice in the world, your company should do pretty well. You've incorporated some clever technological innovations in your amps which appear to give them improved performance at a very competitive price. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future we started seeing the Audere amps included in some of the high end production basses out there, in addition to your current aftermarket upgrade business.

+1 to all of this! With all of the great reviews I've seen here, I can definitely imagine seeing these preamps appearing as options with certain production basses.

I'd love to try out an Audere-equipped Lakland DJ5....;)
