Some inportant knobs missing from this bass including....a knob to turn down LED on th effect board and most importantly a knob to override and turn down any guitarist.....Like a master key.....for the 38 grand that bass cost it should do that and tune itself.

My bass has more knobs than your bass!

Alembic builds exactly what the customer wants, so if you want simple, you get it. Is that master volume, master tone, and pup blend?lembics are simple!!!
I sure could use that compass! Maybe an "auto correct" pedal to keep me from getting lost in a song.
I hate to be one of those "The tone is in the fingers" guys. Buuuttt..
Last night I tracked four different songs.
Same bass, same session, four very different somgs. I moved the tone knob about 20% ONCE, to add a tiny bit of definition when I switched from pick to fingers.
So, I'm a knob minimalist.

Had a guitar store owner trying to sell me on some bass that had like 8 knobs. Got mad when I told him I didn't want to fiddle with that many.

Mica and the Office Staff at Alembic like to play April Fool's pranks on the regulars... just to see if anyone bites. This one was a doozy, but yeah the bass is real... or at least half-real!
That Phil Lesh Demo Video was shot by me - I go to Terrapin often.
I thought both the interview and the demo were/are particularly lame.
It's as if the years wiped Lesh's mind of any clear recollection of how to make Big Brown sing.
No Bombs, no thunder - nothing impressive. Phil referred to a fan during the interview and said something to the effect of, "How come Phil has like 25 knobs on his bass but he always sounds the same?"

It's not my bass. The bass player I spoke with said that he convinced (probably with lots of papers with dead presidents) Alembic to build him this bass. They did but would not wire up the controls. So he bought their Super Filter SF-2 rack mount unit and had and electrical engineer wire it into the bass. The green tape is because the bass is so new that he can't remember what control does what.
Awesome, do you have any YouTube demo's playing that Bass through a MESA BOOGIE amp. Right now Mesa Boogie Strategy 8:88 is my favorite.
That's my bass. I had just received it with the new electronics the night before so I hadn't had a chance to memorize the layout yet. Someone who posted earlier is right, it's an homage to Phil's early Alembic modded starfire. I'm still working on it, but it's almost done. Yes, there are a lot of knobs…. no, I don't NEED them all, but I want them. It's a long held dream come true to have a bass like Phil Lesh's early 70's bass.
