My Crown XLS 1000 is in!!

Pulled the plug on a XLS 1000 today. Good internet deal from Music Center ( $269 + free shipping ). 1000 watts into 4 ohms should be enough for me. If it is'nt, I'm in the wrong band.

hey guys i just got this amp a few days ago, the xls1000 and at the moment i am running it bridged with the lowpass at 79 hz and an 8 ohm load. but it seems like i am getting no power at all from it, i would guess im getting around 50-75 watts from it at the most, my woofer barely moves at full volume. Am i doing something wrong?
I do not have it connected to my reciever though, i am waiting for it to arrive and i should have it soon, but i wanted to use it until then, so it is currently connected to my directtv reciever through the rca's for sound, so i do have bass for watching tv, but when i do play music it is just not what im expecting for power.
any advice?
thanks

The XLS 1000 is an absolute monster of an amp when bridged.

Something sounds wrong on your end. Maybe there's no content below 79 Hz on your signal? Try running it full bandwidth instead and see if it helps any. Maybe the input signal is much too low? Good luck!

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] - crown forum....just happened to be reading that post when i saw yours...it pertains to RCA being "consumer" audio and Balanced XLR being "PRO" audio....though the mod there suggests a rather pricey unit isuggest - http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Radial-Engineering-ProAV2-Stereo-Direct-Box?sku=180144 - i needed 1 when i hooked up my bass O" audio components...also how are you connecting the sub, what kind of cabling? ...lastly probably not much goin on @ below 24Db 79HZ....atleast go 300hz down

im thinking maybe the input signal is low then, i didnt know if there could be a problem with plugging it into my directv reciever.
but i will have my main stereo reciever this upcoming week and hopefully that will fix it.
right now i have it hooked up as being bridged with speaker wir. the reason i bought it was to use a subwoofer, so i am using a 15" driver and it is not getting barely any power.
so since im using a subwooer, i have it set on the low pass and like i said at 79 hz, that would mean any frequency above 79 hz would have the 24 db octave and everything below will get a full signal
the clip signal light sometimes blinks at -20db so i know it has potential to push out much more power.
im hoping when i get my stereo reciever it will all work out

with my mains i could get a flat response or very close with the low pass at 80 hz.. thats the whole reason for it being at 79.
but i also tried it using rca's to a headphone jack to plug into an ipod and it didnt really push it either..
maybe i got a defective unit?
im very excited i have this crown amp, it just sucks its not quite working the way i planned

oh and 1 more question, how would this amp do with a 3 ohm load bridged? would it go into protect or not work? or will it be fine, as most bass would more than likely have some impedience rise and rise to over 4 ohms.
thanks guys

OK

I hooked my iPod Nano to the XLS 1000 using the headphone out, Nano volume set to max, flat EQ, and sent it into the RCA ins. Only at max input volume on the XLS was I able to really crank things, and even at that, the unit never went near 0 dB clip, but it was very loud. I now believe that the RCA ins, and perhaps the other ins, indeed require a pro-level signal. I would therefore suggest an inexpensive sub-mixer if you intend to keep things hooked this way to adequately drive the XLS with gear having consumer-level output.

The manual only rates the unit down to 4 ohms in Bridge Mono, but perhaps it can safely go lower.

I would contact Crown for the correct answer and please let us know what they say :-)

The IPR's can be bridged, just ~manually. I'm guessing cost is why they didn't incorporate it into the design.

Loop both inputs together, then use +1 output from channel A, -1 output from channel B.
Are you sure that works? Typically there's a hot and ground output on each channel. You have to invert the signal to the 2nd channel so that the hot is out of phase with the first channel.

Then you go with +1 from both channels. What you're doing seems like it's getting output from a single channel into your speaker, and driving the other channel without a load. The -1 of the 2nd channel I would assume is ground, which is the same as hooking up to -1 of the first channel. Your 2nd channel is without a load..

If you're referring to speakon terminals, you may indeed be using both hot leads correctly, I'd have to check the wiring diagram, but that still doesn't help, you have to invert the input signal to one channel to get the other channel output out of phase. That's what a bridge switch does, takes the input from channel 1, inverts it, and hooks it up to channel 2. You can't just loop the 2 input channels together to achieve the same results.

Great choice, great amp!

Good luck with it

Charlie, what preamp are you using to drive the Crown with? I'm using an old BBE 383 bass preamp, which a tech at BBE assured me had enough output to drive the XLS 1000. It does get loud in bridged mode with a 4 ohm load, but I have the Crown cranked all the way, with the gain at two o'clock and the master at noon on the BBE. I'm using the unbalanced out ( 1/4 cable ) from the BBE because the XLR out is a DI. I'm wondering if I got a 1/4 to XLR cable , and then went in to the XLR input of the Crown, it might beef up the signal some ?

When in Bridge-Mono mode, the Crown's Ch-1 input level should be set at Maximum and your preamp's master volume should control the overall volume of your rig. In my case, my pre hits the maximum volume that the rig can tolerate at about 2 o'clock. I feel this is a healthy ratio for my components and I am thoroughly satisfied with the both the tones and SPL. I use a 1/4" high-quality interconnect between my pre and the amp.

Cheers!

Thanks. I wondered about turning the Crown all the way up, but so be it. Just thought that maybe the xlr input had more juice for some reason.
