Since it wasn't left on your front door step I think you are okay Joe ha ha ha. Just someone attempting to keep too many goldfish alive in a very small amount of water the dissolved oxygen got used up and they were goners

I'm petsitting a fish this week and it would have been a goner - owner overfed the heck out of it before leaving. I moved it to another bowl, cleaned out its bowl, and will transfer back later. They handle not getting fed a lot better than getting overfed. Those ones, I wonder if they were put in chlorinated water and died from that. Given the apparent size of fish and container, I doubt the using up the oxygen theory. All the bubbles on the bottom make me suspect untreated tap water (temperature shock can also be a factor.)

Until we lost 'her' in the fire, my son had a 'pink' goldfish for ten years. Literally chosen from thousands in a 'feeder fish' tank (the guy in the store was awesome). She lived over ten years. I had to stop buying bigger tanks as she just kept growing to fill the space. She lived in some pretty unfavourable conditions (my son neglecting to clean the tank), and times of underfeeding. I'd step in if it looked like she'd been overfed. The point is that they are pretty tough to kill.
My guess would be nasty, treated tap water did for these poor fellows.

There's probably some sort of socio-political analogy I could use here, but I'm going to be nice.

My dad once forgot a Goldfish in a bucket outside during NY winter. The water completely froze and the Goldfish froze in the shape of a banana. So the next day he brought the bucket inside and let it warm up. The Goldfish survived and was fine except he was stuck in the shape of a banana. He swam in circles and had to really concentrate to swim straight.
