being nice to other bands has lead to some of the best shows we have played. Think about it even if you dont like their music what if they are organizing a show. Are they going to ask you guys to play it if you were complete toolbags to them?... I dont think so. Even If I dont care for their music I try to be nice.
Depends on the genre and scene. I have photos on my facebook page of a number of area bands. I went to their shows. Stayed all night. Took photos, and posted them. GOOD photos, too. I chatted with them, gave them solid feedback, (nothing negative, and no smoke-blowing; honestly told them things I liked, and focused on their strengths,) and I was just wasting my valuable time and money listening to cover bands that are no better than a million other cover bands, and being almost fifty, I've probably heard all I need to hear.
When they do multi-band bills, I have to BEG to be included, and so far, I have a measly ONE show out of all this. Do any of them come to MY shows? NO.
Am I angry?
NO.
Would I care if one of my band members told me this or that band SUCK?
NO.
Would I lend them gear?
HELL NO.
I won't lend ANYBODY gear, period. And I won't pretend we have come kind of scene in this town where bands support each other. I know a band "at the top," and they support any band who is NOT VERY GOOD, because they will always look better than said band.
As soon as anybody is competition for their gigs, they will shut them out as soon as they possibly can EVEN FOR CHARITY GIGS. "Uh, we already have a ROCK band for that show; we're looking for one POP and one FIFTIES act..."
And the "rock" band will be as far down the local ladder, as far as playing ability, vocal quality and whatever else you want to name as possible.
That way, they're "promoting local bands," but not taking any chances of helping the competition.
Seen it a million times. I'm glad you're in a local scene that it pays to be nice to other bands in. I had that, to some degree in Minneapolis, when we were an original act, and what we played was pretty far from everyone else's genre.
But playing four-hour Classic Rock Covers?
Man, that scene is so cutthroat, I've had bands send us HECKLERS, and then act all stupid when I SEE THE GUY HANGING OUT WITH THEM LATER.
Poop on them.
