MY FIRST BASS...?

Hello everyone ...

I`m a begginer and i want to know witch one of these basses is a good choice for me to start playing bass.

ARIA STB-JB-DX :

for my budget of course (300$ max).

I think i must try every of this basses and choose the best for me.
I`m not sure :) i want a gud bass to fit my budget that`s all.

Your Amp and Pedals can affect your sound far more than your bass can.

But it doesn't mean you can get away with a crap bass either, but something reasonably playable will do.

You see people gig with lower end basses all the time, but you never see someone gig with a 10 watt practice amp(or at least I haven't anyway)

I always thought that the boon of getting a SX bass was the the build quality was the nicest for the budget, however you'd have to go frankenbass on it and get some new pickups and preamp, as well as do a fretjob...

Also, I vote for the Peavey because I've never heard of anyone getting a bad Peavey, and the low-cost Ibanez's for me don't have any flexibility; they are just dodgy to me.

I'd also recomend an SX SPB or SPJ. (copy of a Fender Precision Bass)

Easy on the wallet, and are fantastic basses. Personaly I would recomend learning on a Precision sized neck. You don't here many people who play P's moaning that they can't play a J sized neck.

Don't let the price of an SX scare you off. They are way better than their price would suggest. I personally gig all the time with one, and have a few other basses that are worth MANY, MANY times more $$$'s.

That isn't an absolute by any stretch. Plenty of people gig them straight out of the box. If you read the SX mega thread you will find a few people buy them with their list of upgrades in hand and then change their minds after receiving the bass. The J pups nail the classic J tone pretty well. Fret job? Mine are level and the edges are in great shape (I even gave it the silk scarf test - no hangs).

The Peavey BXP's are amazing. I believe they use the same electronics as the Cirrus' do. Either way, if you can find a nice BXP with good fretwork and setup like I did, go for it. $230 is a low price to pay for what you get from a good one

i really want to start playing bass and after i read the posts it seems that i must go to the music store and try every of those basses and choose the best for me.i`m from romania :( and actually i don`t trust the epayment and i can`t purchase a guitar bass online. in fact that`s not a problem after all but i really like to try the guitar before i`ll buy it. i put my the 3 alternatives of basses cuz the music store is located in my city(Constanta) and i can go whenever i want to try&buy something.
sorry for my bad english :P
I`ll go with peavey or ibanez i think...
For bass amp/combo...(15watts-30watts)ashdown,hartke or peavey.

My advice to all first time buyers is to buy the most expensive used Fender you can afford. While SX basses are priced well, they will never hold their value like a used Fender.

If you decide that the bass is not for you, you will have a far easier time selling a Fender bass than any other brand and you by buying used, you can sell it for what you paid for it, or if you're lucky, for more. If you stick to playing bass, and wish to upgrade to another bass, again, it's far easier to sell.

While there are arguably better basses out there, Fender are popular and desirable at at any price point.

That is assuming that a playable used Fender can be found in the price range and that you are getting a good deal. A used Fender at an SX price is not likely to be playable. I think you can sell an SX locally at pretty close to what you pay for one, posssibly even the full amount. The two main reasons I see that people don't consider them is they like to try before they buy and/or they don't buy over the net. It's a bird in the hand and probably the cheapest alternative they are looking at. Google for "SX Bass Craigslist" and check a few listings. Yeah, I know, just because they are asking that doesn't mean they get it. But I have looked at my local craigslist often enough to know a quality bass below $150 is a pretty limited commodity.
