My first real bass amp

Hey guys this is my first post I am looking to buy my first real bass amp I want to spend around 1,000 dollars i was hoping i could get some suggestions. I will be playing in small to midsized clubs and my bass is a gibson thunderbird .I play rock, metal that type a thing thanks in advance.

Acoustic has some pretty good amps for dirt cheap, but if you're looking for more power, id recommend something out of the Gallien krueger RB series or SWR workingpros. both amps have plenty of power and punch for rock.

but are you looking more for a combo amp or a stack?

Well I have David Eden Metro...I bought it used for $1000 best amps ever in my opinion....but I played in a band that had Carvins endorsment and any of their I think it's called BSX line whatever their higher line is. and if I didn't already havea rig I would have bought the 4-10 with head combo they sell, it's a great sounding set up

You can never go wrong with Carvin in my opinion even thier new Icon bass is really freakin sweet

for the money I would go Carvin unless you can find a metro like I did for a great price

good luck

Get the Carvin SBX410 $1099.99. I've got it, it's one extremely powerful amp bridged at 4 ohms 1,200 watts rms. I've had the BX1200 head for 2 yrs and it's never failed me once and I play almost every weekend. Plus, I've dropped the head 4 times on cement, once out of the back of my car onto the cement pavement BAM, BAM, BAM somersalted 3 times and still works like a champ - super reliable. Lot's of bells and whistles too.

What would the advantages of a gallien kruger VS a carvin is it strictly personal opinion. Does it have alot better tone sorry for all the noob questions but that is the only way you learn thanks again

I believe that it's up to the individual to get a good sound. Amps that are a $1,000 or more all can sound good, it's whether or not the player can get a good sound. Personally, I play a '08' MIA Fender Jazz V thru my Carvin and people who are players that hear it say it sounds great, very thick and deep lows with high clear responce. I can say my sound is great, but the true tell tale is in what others think of your sound, tone and playing abilties.

i don't have much experience with carvin stuff. but there seem to be many guy son here that have used them and seem to like what they have.

the "advantages" of GK is i think of them as the rock/metal amp. and they give ME the sound i like to hear.

some notable gk players
flea - chili peppers
justin chancellor - tool
rachel bolan - skid row
john warne - relient k
eddie jackson - queensryche
duff mckagan - gnr/velvet revolver

there are other amps out there... go play as many as you can. go to places like guitar center, sam ash, etc. and play. find something you like the sound of... then start looking on the used market. i would look here first. there are some great guys and great deals here on the TB classifieds.

hope that helps.

I think you're on the right track with that Carvin BX1200 head. I looked at a used one at a Daddy's Junky Music a couple months ago that was basically in new condition and I was really impressed by the bang for the buck in this piece of gear. Lots of power, lots of EQ'ing... LOTS! I would have grabbed it right away, but I've settled in with a preamp/power amp layout that I'm extremely happy with these days.

A Carvin cab might be a good match for that head, but another great value around these days is Avatar. You can check out some of our pals' experiences with their stuff here or look up their website. The used market is full of really good stuff too, but you never know when you're going to stumble across "that" fantastic deal. I like dealing with Daddy's because they'll back their used gear for a short period after you buy it and you can also pay for extended warranties, plus they take trades.
