my first time considering getting flats

like im visting in florida i brougth my bass its my pride and joy :bassist:
my 1 year old cuz got a hand on it and broke the e string :crying: they wher EB'S super slinkys too round wounds...so im getting a new set but sould i still to rounds or go to flats

so i play alll rock like metal clasic and funk rock stuff like RHCP,rush,metallica,and stuff inbetween and is flat wounds good for slap and pop stuff? i no its good for finger style ...i dont use pick at all exlusive to the fingers (pick sucks bite me pick users :D:p:hiding:)


i have HEAVY attack on my bass like some bassest are scared that i migth snap a string playing (never has happend to me) i heard that flats helps with the attack issue so sould i still to rounds or go for flats??

I was gonna mention spell check, but I figured I'd check your age under your profile before I did. Holy crap! YOU HAVE TYPOS ALL OVER THE PLACE!

I suggest working on your right hand technique...both on the bass and on the QWERTY keyboard. Both would benefit immensely. No sense just banging away for the hell of it like it's a strong man competition.

that coment made my day im lke dieing here and my aunt and uncle r sleeping like 20 feet from me ...and i worked on it a little more i got less attack i let my new rig take care of the volume for me :D:D

I wouldn't do it if I were you, based on the music you listed you seem to prefer a modern-ish and cutting bass tone. Usually people go for flats if they want the opposite (i. e. a warm and bassy tone). Slapping with flats in particular will sound nowhere like the bright and punchy slap sound that can be heard on lots of recordings.

I can get a *very* focused and cutting tone with my chromes (flats), especially by boosting highs on my (Sadowsky) preamp. They are brighter than most flats of course. I really like the fat heavy attack I get, even when I'm 100% on the bridge pickup.

But, I don't do much slap. Flats can get a very cool slap sound, but it's very different from the roundwound slap sound.

Flats have a very nice round fingerstyle sound and tone, but RHCP/Rush/Metallica they're definitely not. If you can't hang with 4-month old roundwounds, you're going to hate flats (they're more akin to 6-month to 1-year old rounds out of the box). There are those who slap with flats, and it is a very cool sound, but it's going to sound way different than with rounds. More of a deep thud than a bright clank.

The way I see it is that a string can only handle so much energy before it actually is counterproductive. It would sound like an envelope filter so to speak by playing it way too hard. It doesn't take much energy to sound a perfect clean note. In fact, most people get faster when they relax and play gently. Try it for a while. Play as light as possible. Vey soon you'll see how much faster you get and your notes will sound much cleaner.

What a cool link! Very interesting hearing the difference between the two strings like that. I can really hear the difference in how flats seem to sit in the mix better in the motown samples. At first, the bass sounds a little transparent but as soon as the band comes in BAM! there it is. Great.
