I hear you. I have a marimba sitting in my basement that exceeds the value of 5 or 6 of my basses put together. Now that my kid is in college, it mainly gets used as a countertop for my other junk. The investment did pay off -- my kid remained committed to music thru high school, and is now on the drumline of a Big10 marching band (and loving it). Kudos to you for supporting your kids' music. Believe me...it'll be WAY worth it to you in the long run.

The added inspiration of a new instrument can cause increased practice time and plateaus to be hit. Also, the difference in tone between a student and professional model sax is considerable. I imagine it's a lot better for you also.

I had GAS by proxy -- unrequited. I have about five instruments I bought for my children and none of them "took". Now I have all these shorter instruments and I have to sell them, what a hassle. And guess what, I can't bring myself to sell them!

I was driving with my oldest daughter today, and I told her I was going to look in the local music store today. She said fine because she needed a mouthpiece for her alto sax. I was having a ball playing an Ibanez four with the reverse split pickup/single configuration that has such a great slap tone. I was sitting thinking how I could buy it when my daughter told me how much she liked the sax she had just been playing. I already knew she needed a better sax for her senior year, plus she wants to be in marching band in college, so goodbye bass and hello professional grade alto sax. My big girl plays soprano too, I better put aside some money for one of those too.

Me too. Really warms my heart reading this story, and I hope I have similar ones to share as well as my little family grows up. It gives me great hope to hear about other parents sharing the joy of music with their kids
