My GAS has met its match.

I was driving with my oldest daughter today, and I told her I was going to look in the local music store today. She said fine because she needed a mouthpiece for her alto sax. I was having a ball playing an Ibanez four with the reverse split pickup/single configuration that has such a great slap tone. I was sitting thinking how I could buy it when my daughter told me how much she liked the sax she had just been playing. I already knew she needed a better sax for her senior year, plus she wants to be in marching band in college, so goodbye bass and hello professional grade alto sax. My big girl plays soprano too, I better put aside some money for one of those too.

I just got reeeeeeeeeally close to buying a bass. Then I remembered we're getting the Fingers girls a digital piano for Christmas. Music money is tied up for now. But I'm so excited and proud that they're into music!

Awesome! Same here...although, my little one is being drawn to the dark side....another drummer!
But, I have to admit, I've never had a better reason or motivation for abstaining from my own GAS.

It is what we do. I paid for a number of trumpets over the years. Even if it had been a dead end, it would have been worth it. He makes a living with it now, so it was especially worth it. He is more Jamerson than GAS prone though. His current trumpet looks awful and is about ten years of constant playing old. It is on its way to being the funk machine of trumpets.

I'm glad your post went this way, because from the title, i was gonna have to call bull$#!t!
I've especially enjoyed your posts about chasing GAS, and know that that's a never-ending quest.

Also, this makes me glad I gave up sax after highschool.
I just looked at the prices on some horns, and hokey smoke!!

Reminds me of the time I took my the budding brass player son with me on a crosstown trek about 15 years ago to the only shop in town that had a set of tapewounds. We came home with the strings... and a flugelhorn!

My wife would say it was a chance to build character. Seriously, I'm all for not giving in to every whim, but she capriciously says no to the kid just for the heck of it at times. Drives me (and the kid) up the wall. Uhhh woman. He asked nicely. It's not like he's asking for ice cream before supper or a motorcycle. (He's 5) She apparently thinks giving your kids snakes instead of of fish builds character.

Looks awful means it's blotchy and grimy looking even when it's clean. That's from the audience! Up close it looks even rattier. He doesn't care, and as long as he keeps it clean and doesn't get sick from something living in grime inside the instrument, I'm perfectly ok with it. It's cheaper than a new one. We have offered, and he has said he's happy with what he has.

I purchased a 4/4 Concert Tuba for my son last year and that one Tuba cost me more than I have ever spent on a bass or any piece of gear. He also plays Sousaphone in his high school marching band, so I may have another horn purchase in my future. But, it is so worth it. In January, my wife and I traveled from California to New York to watch he and his high school group perform at Carnegie Hall! So, the expense has already paid dividends in memories for our whole family. Plus, as an added bonus, we now both read bass clef! Got a New Orleans trip coming up and I am hoping to get him over to Preservation Hall. Sharing music with your daughter is an amazing gift you have given her. Kudos to you!

That is funny, my dad has a handgun, I told him to keep it. He said I can't use it in a retirement home, I said "you could hold them up for more food"!!
