In too many fields these days, you have "techs/mechanics" or "parts replacers". Parts replacers are the ones who typically diagnose something without even looking at it (even when it's right in front of them), and then change a particular part, which doesn't solve the problem. Then they change another part, and on it goes...until a tech/mechanic properly diagnoses and fixes the problem (including the additional ones caused by the parts replacer).

Guess how I know this...

This service industry needs to get their act together, learn new technology, learn new troubleshooting techniques, learn how to use tools and common sense or there will be no service industry left.

I don't know what the situation is in the US but in Australia the electronics servicing industry is already all but gone.

so many car mechanics are like this now! What does the computer say is wrong? ok we'll replace that. then computer says something else, over and over until it finds the real problem, while you've replaced a bunch of things that were actually fine.

I searched long and hard to find a mechanic who actually listens to and diagnoses the problems with my car, not JUST using the computer but also using common sense, who opens it up and looks at the symptoms, appearance of certain parts etc.... and has lots of experience.

Same with electronics repair etc.

Although with the move to digital, and to surface mount and to multi layer boards etc, it's much hard to repair some parts of the units we use now than it used to be.

I repair my own cell phone - but of course I'm a parts replacer for that... and a software engineer. not actually repairing components....

IME With SS amps is when they go wonky, thank it for it’s service and let it go. Any time i’ve tried to get one repaired, the estimate was enough that just a little bit more would get me a new(er) amp.
This gives me an excuse to put some time into looking at amps because like so much other technology, the only constant is change so why not come out of the bunker from time to time and see why Beaut McNuke with the Dull Razers is so taken by the new Doomspeak Sizzler 860.
certain basses may be timeless but not so SS Amps.
At least that’s my personal take on the whole SS amp situation.

No way!! Maybe that's the case with some of the newer, 'disposable' amps. But tossing any & every solid state amp that gets 'wonky' is not a rule of thumb anyone should be interested in following.
