My Musical Project - a diary

I've justed started work on "Goodbye Stranger" by Supertramp for the smaller band (5 piece) - this is turning out to be more work than the big band charts! Mainly because of the need to do an accurate piano part. The guy I have lined up for this plays dots on sight like a MIDI player, but he needs every note scored. Phew.

Haven't seen any updates from you for a while - knowing how much needs to go into writing those charts I'm guessing you are kinda busy with it :-) -hope all is going great - how's the set coming together?

Cheers, Martin. It's next Friday! I've been a bit lax keeping this thread up to date - but man, have I been busy. ;)

There's effectively three bands playing on the night. It's like herding cats!

But the set lists are more or less firmed up now. First rehearsal is this Saturday, then one Wednesday and the big band rehearsal is Thursday, just 24 hours before the gig. I still need two trombonists, but I'm working on it. The set looks totally great, though I say it myself. I've written a load of charts - wish I'd had more time to get some others done. It's sort of crept up on me, as these things do. Some great music to be played, though.

I just need to keep up the momentum to make this work...

Great stuff Bill the set list you had earlier was a belter - know what you've been through getting the arrangements done and corraling players but it will come together - too good a prospect not to-I'll have a word with the trombone gods-think I'm still a member - just!
If you get a chance between rounding up ham-boners and the million or so other things let us know how it's going.

Well, we've made the move up to Carlisle and new term at our new schools starts Monday 3rd Sept. it would have been great to meet you at last and join in with the merriment...alas Mrs Crow has pointed out that the Friday before starting a big new job wouldn't be prudent on my part. :(

I have to be honest here... it wasn't the most rehearsed gig I've ever played. But we got through it. I don't know how much got videoed so I'm just waiting to see what folks got on their camera phones. I should have been more on the ball with this, but I was so busy "herding cats" that I oouldn't get sorted on the recording aspects.

Look forward to seeing some footage Bill - delighted to hear it went well and you had a great time - there's never enough time for rehearsal - perfection doesn't exist but the atmosphere and buzz of a gig like that can't be beaten - for musicians and audience alike!

Okay -I've had a few folks asking me about video clips for this. This is the situation.

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: I should have said at the start of the gig, "People, there's enough of us in here to get the whole thing recorded. Most of you have phones that will do good video, just take it in turns and see if you can get most of the stuff down for me." Damn, damn, damn... it sounds so easy now.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED: I only made a point of asking for recordings for the number my Dad played on.

As a result, I have several (pretty decent) recordings of that tune. The file sizes are big but I will try and find a way of sharing here at some point. But although I'm delighted Dad got up to play, I have to be honest and say an 82 year old drummer doesn't show off the band at its best (sorry, Dad).

I also have a couple of very short clips of the small band (from the first set) playing "Low Rider" and "We Are Family", about 20 seconds each.

That's it. I'm hoping some more stuff might turn up, especially of the big band, but I'm not optimistic now. I could really, really, really kick myself for this. But I was so busy on the night and I sort of assumed (yeah, I know) it would happen. If only I'd said... (see above).

I am heartbroken, to be honest. One of the best nights I've ever had and a dumb oversight means I have almost no record of it. The earlier posts in this thread saying to make sure it got recorded make me want to cry right now.
