My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

Cable storage hooks are all done.

I missed the stud on one of the hooks, so there’s a 15/64” hole in the drywall I need to patch and paint. I still need to install the strike plate on the sound door. Beyond that it’s just emptying it out, sweeping and then moving my stuff in to call the vestibule finished.

IME, shelves not supported in front will sag., especially filled with equipment.

I did it on the fly, so I don't have the numbers on-hand to report. Also, it wasn't an inside vs outside comparison. It was all outside and compared the level of ambient "background" noise to the SPL added by playing drums inside the studio. Measurements were done on the side of the structure with the weakest sound isolation.

I did an impromptu sound test earlier in the thread, and on the north side of the building where the HRV runs straight through the wall the sound of drums could be heard, but it was quieter than a dog barking in the distance, birds, ambient road noise, etc.

Maybe a tiny bit, but it's 3/4" birch plywood. It's more than capable of carrying the weight of anything I'm going to put on it.

Sides, bottom and top are all on. It’s all 1/2” birch plywood with a layer of Green Glue in between. Tomorrow I’m going do all of the sealing, run the flex duct, and install the vents. After that I’ll add the front, paint it, add roof flashing, roofing, and probably call it good for the day. I’ll need to finish the corner trim pieces next week, unless I can miraculously get it all done in one shot.

Box is up and painted. The goal was to make it look as unobtrusive as possible. I forgot to to take pictures of the installed baffles, flex ducting, and the absolute mountain of acoustic sealant inside and exterior grade sealant outside. Suffice it to say, the thing is air tight.

I’m adding corner trim to make it match the rest of the structure and to dress up the not great looking ends of plywood. After this I’ll get the roofing on and it’ll be done.

Baffle box is done. The roof looks hideous, but will function just fine, so I’m good with it.

My wife and I did an isolation test. Below is a YouTube link with two parts. First is my wife outside while I’m playing drums inside, then it switches to inside where my wife is filming me and a dB meter to give an idea of how loud it was inside the studio. Spoiler alert, it was about 85dB. The YouTube compression on the video makes the exterior portions louder than they actually are when I listen to the source video. The baffle box has made everything alarmingly quiet. The difference in the dB meter outside was imperceptible until she was right on the baffle box, crouching down and looking up at the vents. You can still hear it everywhere else, but it’s so low that it doesn’t affect the background noise as far as a dB meter is concerned.

I’m declaring this a roaring success for my goals.



I should also note that I installed the strike plate on the sound door. The only thing left to do is grab some exterior white caulk to dress up the corner trim on the baffle box. There’s also finishing up the exterior hardscaping and getting some plants in the ground to dress it up. That’s it.

Nothing yet. I've been very uninspired musically lately. Between the few outstanding items and the mess in the main room (since the vestibule storage wasn't finished to allow me to organize), all I've been using it for is rehearsing. I'm going to clean it out and organize it all tonight and tomorrow night. Once those are done I can actually start working in there as intended.
