My relationship with the vibratory compactor might have been in turmoil, but that's okay because what is no doubt going to be my ultimate man crush on a piece of equipment pulled onto my property moments later. THIS. THING. WAS. EPIC. ..........behold.........

It was the much heralded slinger truck. This thing was unreal. I had serious doubts about its ability to deliver rock as precisely inside of the walls as I'd seen in video clips online. I expected a lot of little piles that I was going to have to spread out and level manually, and given the size of the rocks in the first load I was not looking forward to it. The beast roared in defiance of my skepticism and immediately proved me wrong.

A buddy of mine called it a "rock breathing dragon" and I don't think he was wrong.

As you can see, the operator isn't even in the truck. He has a remote control in a lunchbox sized orange box with two levers and a button. He could use that to pretty ably move the conveyor from left to right, up and down, in and out, adjust the speed of the conveyor, and make it do a little pulsing jump move like a low rider with hydraulics. Very very cool.

This was after we had the first six cubic yards of 1-1/4" minus crushed rock installed. This is big, heavy, scary when flying off the end of a conveyor belt sized rock that will make a superb base course for construction. A few rocks went rogue and came only several feet from hitting my neighbor's relatively new Mercedes-Benz. I'm REALLY glad that didn't happen as they're pretty new neighbors and we haven't even been properly introduced yet. That conversation would have sucked.

The driver finished up the first load and then headed out to grab the following load, which was smaller 5/8" minus crushed rock. While he was out I was able to spread and rough level the first load and hit it with the plate compactor three times. It was very solid. I could have easily driven my car on it with little repercussions. I grabbed a sandwich, talked briefly with my dad on the phone, and then he was back. I hopped off the phone and ran out to meet him and we began unloading the 5/8" material.

I was still in awe of how well the machine (and the operator) were performing. Man crush continues unabated.

Unlike the 1-1/4" material, the 5/8" stuff was safe enough to work on while it was being delivered. It came out in a much more controlled manner which is saying a lot because the 1-1/4" was far from wild.

To give you an idea of just how controlled it was, take a look at this picture. You can see how tightly the rock is "clumped" together as it's coming off of the conveyor.

Here's a quick video of the 5/8" material being unloaded. I'm still blown away by how well this thing worked.

I'm still shocked by how well it worked. I'm going to take an opportunity to give a free plug to the guys who made it possible and saved me a lot of effort. The delivered cost for these materials via the slinger truck compared to companies that would just show up with a dump truck, plop the material in my driveway and leave me to it with a shovel and wheelbarrow was only SLIGHTLY higher. Well worth the tiny bit of added cost relative to the effort and time it would have taken. To put it lightly I still wouldn't be anywhere close to done as I'm typing this. If you're doing something similar, give these guys a shout.

Back to the old habit of spreading, rough leveling, adding fine leveling this time around, and compacting.

I thought I had it leveled pretty well, so I ran the compactor once over the whole thing. I knew the first pass with the compactor wasn't going to be good enough for a final level, but it needed to be done. This also revealed a high spot through the middle focused on the south side. I busted up the compacted rock with the mattock and used a rake to redistribute it, and then re-compacted the entire thing. I repeated this process yet another time before I was happy with the results. After all of that I ran the compactor over it an additional time to ensure proper compaction.

Here's a video of the compactor in action over the 5/8" material. You can see how well it transforms loose rock into a very tight surface in seconds.


This was the end result of all the day's labors. A smooth, surprisingly level, very stout, heavily compacted base that is 100% ready for installation of the building.

Wanting to minimize the amount of water that would potentially be trapped behind the wall I popped down to Home Depot and picked up a 20'x30' tarp. Hydraulic pressure from water trapped behind a retaining wall with no outlet is a major problem, so I wanted to minimize that until the building and the French drains are installed. It's also worth mentioning that the cap stones on the wall aren't properly aligned yet, nor are they glued down. I'm not going to bother with that until the weather is warmer and drier (per the installation specifications of the concrete adhesive I'll be using), and in case they get bumped during installation of the building.

Basically I put the giant to sleep for the next few weeks. I delayed the building delivery until March 11th, which was the next available installation date. I didn't think I could get the base finished as quickly as I did, and the weather forecast looked awful. As it turns out I got it done ahead of schedule and the weather, aside from a brief downpour on Monday morning has been sunny, clear and lovely. If I hadn't moved the delivery date all would have been well and I might have the building installed already. No worries. This will give me some time to recouperate before the next phase begins.

As I mentioned previously I made myself quite sick doing this work, which is still a little baffling as I showed no symptoms other than a high fever, extreme fatigue, heartburn and some mild nausea. If I had a head cold or a stomach bug I would have understood a little better, but this was just odd. Oh well. It forced me to take the following day off which was certainly a good idea. This was me right before I called it quits for the day. I was obviously hamming it up for the camera, but in retrospect the face I was making is quite representative of how I felt.

I'm about a month away from replacing an old cracked and heaved asphalt garage floor myself. We're nowhere near t-shirt weather for a while yet.

I think I'll do the slinger truck thing as well for the gravel base instead of hand bombing it all. The demolition of the existing floor is going to take all the motivation and energy I have. In fact, I may contract that part out! Sad part is, I won't get a studio out of it....just a level floor where I can park my motorcycles without risk of them tipping over!
 
Just solved a design problem I'd been having. My expected solution was going to be another backbreaking, heavy ordeal that would cost around $1,200, but is now a very lightweight, easy couple of hours that will only cost around $170!

This is why you do your research up front people.... Then you research some more... A little more... Double check... Triple check... More research... :p

Edit: To be specific my concern was the floor structure resonating like a drum head when all was said and done. There will be tongue and groove wood decking on top of the steel floor joists, then Green Glue, then DensDecking, then underlayment, then flooring. That all works great for airborne sound transmission, but doesn't eliminate flanking paths for foot falls into the open joist cavities which will be sitting right on top of my newly prepared foundation material (i.e. the crushed rock I just compacted). I was planning on backfilling with sand which would be heavy and expensive, but it turns out mineral wool can be installed on grade with zero moisture or mold concerns. It will do a more than sufficient job of eliminating that drum head type resonance in the cavity while walking around in the structure, it will keep impacts while drumming from creating resonance that will end up in mics, as well as serving as yet another sound isolation component.

Good solution. Just make sure you zip it up tight so the critters don't get too cozy in there. I've got a similar issue at my cottage - the critters like to get up into the under-floor insulation and nestle in - or worse - find thier way inside. Diamond lath in strategic spots makes that quite a bit more difficult.

There's no point of entry provided they can't chew through galvanized steel, haha.
I was wrong. There are small vents centered in each joist bay to allow moisture to escape. I'll need to use some galvanization friendly metal adhesive and mesh screen squares to block those holes from critter invasion while still allowing moisture to pass through it freely.
 
Just ordered 2 yards of 1-1/2" washed rock for all of the French drains. I'll also be using the remainder to build the splash pad for the outfall of the French drains and gutters/downspouts, as well as filling the bottom of some galvanized stock tanks we'll be using as planters and filling in some spots that have eroded in the alley adjacent to my house. A minus type rock (i.e. something with fines) is really what you want for the alley application, but I'm not about to order ANY more rock for this project if I don't have to.

I also ordered 47 bags (65lbs each) of some nice 2" river rock in a varied gray color. This will go in the "trough" between the steel substructure and the cap stones along the building. They'll be freely draining to help the French drains on top, and they'll look great.

All of it will be delivered next week. That means I've got the weekend off! Huzzah!

Had some pretty massive rains (for Seattle) last night, and now my tarped off structure looks like a blue swimming pool. A 3" deep swimming pool, but a swimming pool none the less.

The bad news is that the water appears to be highlighting some low spots in the grading of the crushed rock. I need to go straighten out some bunched up parts on the tarp that might simply be creating a dam, but if not I'll need to bust out my mattock, rock rake, hand tamper, and contractor's level over the weekend to make sure it's as level as possible before the substructure gets installed next week.

Requested another delay on the building construction. The forecast shows rains going straight through to next Thursday. Building in the rain isn't the end of the world, but it's much less desirable than building while it's dry. If I end up having them build while it's raining I'd need to setup several box fans running constantly to remove as much trapped water as possible before sealing up the building's interior. Dehumidifiers are too effective, so you have to use an intentionally ineffective method (box fans) and use your best judgement as to when things are dry enough that the fans are no longer providing a benefit. I'd much rather avoid the guessing game and just build once the weather cooperates.

They might come out and build the steel substructure on Monday, in which case I would simply cover it back up with a tarp once they were done and the inspector had signed off on it. Oh the joys of rainy season construction in Seattle.
