My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

I'll definitely check that, but going wonky in all sorts of bizarre ways might sound pretty cool...
Alan Parsons describes using intentionally different sample rates as a way to create an effect similar to tape delay while working in a digital medium in his DVD series "The Art and Science of Sound Recording." If you know what you're doing with it (I don't) you can achieve some pretty inventive things by manipulating sample rates. For my un-creative purposes all I need to know is whether the intended final delivery is purely audio (choose 44.1 or 88.2), if it will be used as part of a video (choose 48 or 96), or if I will be required to use crappy ITB synths that need super high sample rates to sound good despite everything else in the project behaving just fine at REASONABLE sample rates (choose 192 and complain about it every time you so much as look at the session).

I don't know how I missed this thread but I'm on board now because this is too nice just the kick in the pants I needed.
I'm working on it, but as you've no doubt noticed, the Seattle permitting department isn't making it easy on me. I'm hoping to hear back from my geotechnical consultant today so I can at least come up with a prospective timeline.

Indeed. Effectively if you cut your sample rate in half you'll represent the highest frequency that can be reproduced. So a sample rate of 44,100hz (44.1khz) can only produce frequencies as high as 22,050hz (22.05khz). For most applications this is more than acceptable because as we know the upper limits of human hearing is around 20khz when you're very young (it decreases over time regardless of how well you treat/protect your ears), and a speaker system's ability to reproduce sounds at the extreme ends of the spectrum drops dramatically. Add to that the function of dither (i.e. noise shaping) and it really becomes a non-issue to work at what many consider "lower" sample rates, specifically the 44.1/48 realm.

There are other factors to consider beyond just the Nyquist frequency. There's behavior that happens to digital audio as you approach Nyquist that can lead to some nasty behavior in a session, which is why you'll see a lot of guys going with 88.2 or 96khz sampling rates. That moves Nyquist so far beyond what most instruments and voices can produce, what can be reproduced by a speaker or ever heard by a human that it becomes a non-issue. It does this at the expense of larger file sizes and increased processing power demands. There's always the crazy 128, 192, etc. sample rates, but I put those down as completely unnecessary and only there as a way boast about higher numbers with no real world return.

The only caveat to the whole thing comes in the form of ITB synths. There are some that behave differently, and arguably better, at higher sample rates. I don't really understand the science behind it, but it's well documented. To be clear I'm talking about actual synthesizers and not just samplers. That said, I still do most of my work in the 44.1/48 realm and have never run into a problem with any of the synths I frequently used. There again to be clear, the only synth I really use anymore these days is Xfer's Serum simply because I like the interface, it sounds good, and it provides enough sounds for my limited synth needs.

I lost the hearing in one of my ears so I may need you to do some mixing for me once you get up and running.
Also worth mentioning; I've read reports of guys who've lost hearing on one side mixing in mono with great results. The trick is to be able to switch back and forth between "mid" and "side" conditions. Essentially when you're mixing a stereo playback in mono you're getting "summed" or "folded" mono, which is to say that stereo information is typically just speaker-dependent volume for a given source (i.e. you're not really placing things in the stereo image like a pan knob would make you think), and in this case you're summing all of that information and then playing the result in equal portions out of the left and right speakers. This is the "mid" condition. That leaves the "side" condition unplayed by the sum. You can account for this in your DAW by configuring your 2buss to play in mono, this gives you the "mid" condition, and then using a plugin, toggle a phase reversal control. In phase maintains the "mid" condition, and out of phase (again, when summed to mono) gives you the "side" condition. This is useful because the "mid" is telling you what you've kept in the stereo image, and the "side" tells you what you've excluded from it. Combine that with a good frequency spectrum analyzer, a stereo image analyzer (sometimes called a vectorscope), and a phase correlation meter, not to mention a good handle on how to use all of them effectively, and you'd be surprised at how well you can mix even with one of your ears underperforming compared to the other.

+1 I'm a sucker for a soothing voice I miss that guy on PBS with the big afro who painted I loved that guy. Summer of 16 sounds perfect.
 
Sorry to hear about your permitting issues. In retrospect, do you think you would have been better off renovating the existing garage for your needs? Do you regret tearing down?

I have a similar conundrum - 1922 house with a 1930s or 40s garage in need of attention. Renovate or rebuild? I'll have permitting issues no doubt, but more a function of setbacks and variances... I don't have slope or geotechnical issues. Would be nice to convert this into studio space.
 
Still nothing back yet. The geotechnical consultant I talked to last week can't get the ball rolling until the 9th. I hit up one of my geotechnical contacts (I work in civil and environmental engineering by day, so this is right in my wheelhouse) and he gave me a good recommendation for a firm that does small projects in Seattle. Armed with that as a backup plan I started tackling the information DPD had given me, vaguely, last week. Basically they gave me two options based on a "Tips" system that they have in place to make things "easier" for people applying for a permit.

1. Tip 327A allows for exemptions to steep slope development prohibitions, but it doesn't outline AT ALL what is required. I have an email in to DPD asking for the specifics. The problem with 327A is that out of the six possible reasons for granting an exemption, I only line up with one of them. This will be a tough battle, and the one that will require, I think, the geotechnical report. The review process was relayed to my contractor as "about two weeks" and later to me as "many months." Subtle difference... Ugh...

2. Tip 327B allows exemptions in ECAs for accessory structures. Sounds perfect right? Well, in a steep slope ECA the maximum ground disturbance allowed under the exemption is 300sf. I've got plans at this point for a 14'x24' building that sits on a building pad that measures 17'x26', which is the area that qualifies as the ground disturbance. At 442sf, that's 142sf over the limit and definitely far enough to make this unrealistic for my purposes using 327B. By the time you factor in the footprint of the block walls and the 6" clear distance from the edges of the structure to the back of the blocks it would only allow me room to build an 8.5'x24' structure. I could widen that out at the expense of width, but either way the dimensions start to get really pinched. The widest I can make the structure is 14', and by the time you account for the block walls and clearances that only leaves me with a 14'x15.64' (nobody builds to that tolerance, so it would likely be 14'x15' or POSSIBLY 14'x15.5'). Either way I'm getting close to a square building which is a major no-no in terms of acoustics. The vaulted ceiling helps to mitigate that, but not enough to not end up with some nasty room modes. So now I'm back to making it a skinnier structure. Going down to 12' wide allows me to get to a 12'x18' structure. That's not horrible, but it cramps things down enough that building the soft dividing wall is no longer an option. That dividing wall was the difference in being able to track a live drummer, or a mic'd guitar/bass amp, or a singer, or anything requiring a microphone without having to wear headphones in the control room (which would now no longer be its own separate room). That seemingly subtle difference changes the use of the space from a room that can serve as a recording and production studio as well as a creative and session work space for myself, to only being the latter. I would really only be able to use it for my own creative work and when I'm doing sessions remotely. I could still record material for people's projects, but it becomes a much tougher sell. "Hey, come to my professional room that is actually treated for acoustics properly, but stil retains the feel of a nice bedroom studio which will makes you think that it's not a professional space."

Trying to keep my chin up. We'll see how this goes. Hopefully the DPD contact responds to my email by tomorrow.
