My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

I believe you under estimate your fans.
Your project is one of the most educational/informative things going.
Keep us in the loop with as many posts as humanly possible.

I appreciate this thread because I can check in periodically and remind myself how grateful I am that I haven’t undertaken such a massive project.

I just have a simple practice and recording space. About all I did was install a solid wood inner door to reduce sound transmission.

Building more drywall ledgers.

And more...

Here’s why. Without an additional ledger the Whisper Clips don’t have sufficient space to do their job, or even fit in-place once the hat channel and drywall is installed on the adjacent wall.

Tying the west wall clips and channels into the north wall. I was going to start drywalling the north wall but realized I need my electrician to do some work before I seal it up. Slight rearrangement of work tasks, but nothing that will slow me down too drastically... assuming I can get him out here in a week or two.

The hat channel that I shorted on my original order is on a UPS truck somewhere in Seattle. I just ran out so I’ll be setting clips all over the studio and clipping in the hat channel when it arrives.

Just realized I’ve made yet another mistake. Remember a while back when I installed the first layer of drywall on the south wall? In doing so I short changed myself on screwing surface for the clips at the end of the run in the southeast and southwest corners. That’s what I get for not just sticking to the lid! There is a solution though...

I can either tear down the south wall drywall, set clips and channel, then put the drywall back up, or I can run down to Home Depot, but two more 2x6s and stack a third ledger in the bay and forget about the whole thing. I’ll be doing the latter.

East wall clips and channel are done save for the last ~24” that will have to wait until the second layer of drywall goes up on the south wall.

Whoops! Forgot to do the upper triangle before starting said second layer.

Upper triangle finished.

Second layer finished on the eastern half of the southern wall, which subsequently allowed me to finish the clips and channels on the eastern wall.

Decoupled, damped and doubled (mass).

More progress, but alas I have to leave for a dinner party. Sigh... I’ll hopefully get back to it tomorrow.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve contemplated building a space. Our family has a couple of acreages outside of town, and I’ve considered building a big performance and recording space out there. My thought was to build something big enough that it would be fairly special for this part of the country. Something like 35’ ceilings and at least 50’x80’.

In the mean time, it seems I’ve become quite satisfied to just be a music creator with some cool old music toys and a small and obsolete recording rig.

I recently came across a demo of a Roland TD-50KV digital drum set. The idea of in the box kits, being able to load samples, and not having to mic is appealing. Technology is making good strides. They look impresive but at $7.5K, they are pretty expensive. Especially when you think that a new model is already in the works.




This is an older Roland model. Not too bad.

Acoustic. I have kits for playing out, but I don’t have one really high end studio kit and that’s something I’d like to remedy.
