My new (used) cabinets!

I've gotta say, I've only had these for a week, but because of the individual power amp control I can keep the levels of the 15 and the 410 very even. It's quite nice actually. Crossedover the 15 is doing a really good job at keeping all the low end in check and the 410 has my highs and mids on lock down. I really don't see any problems this far. But I suppose this is one of those debates like Japanese vs American cars, or Pepsi vs Coke or... Red Vs Blue (Halo Joke) that just comes down to personal preference.

@ christw.

OK I am argumentative (getting counselling) but am not ignorant nor do I have closed mind.

Also appreciate the opinions here however i find that a good 15 can do all that a good 4x10 can do and more.

Then you need to check out specs a little more carefully.

Speakers make sound via displacement (how much air it can move).

Typical 15's are on par with a 2X10, NOT a 4X10.

Yes, there are top of the line 15's that have high displacement, but you will not find them in commercially available cabs.

Spencer, congrats on finding what sounds like a great rig at a great price.

If you are running a biamp setup with a crossover then you are balancing which frequencies go where, that should help you dial in a sound that pleases your ear. Not sure how much juice you are sending to each cab but that would be my next big concern, as the 410 can probably handle more than the 115.

Take what you read here with a grain of salt, lots of people with strong beliefs, many of whom are right, but the most important opinion is YOURS.

Rock on brother.

Moke, nobody is saying that 15s are bad. What is being said is that mixing one with a 4x10 is bad. A single 15 will never be able to keep up with a 4x10 in any regard no matter what you yourself think.

Spencer, the advice I have offered you is valid and for the reasons I have laid out. You can follow it or not it's your choice. The 15 on top is the best way to operate your rig until you can get a second identical 4x10.

When you "balance" the outputs of each cab the 15 is being asked to be as loud as the 4x10. This it cannot do safely and will eventually fail.

@Paul

Agrees matching a 15 with anything but another 15 has problems.

But its about frequency range of speakers. Given the human ear range is about 20Hz to 20Khz anything in the range will work. Most high range new 15s are about 40Hz to 18Khz.

Some new 15s go as low as 26 HZ but sacrifice high end and cant get past 10 Khz.

Most good 10" are also about 40Hz - 18Khz so maybe it makes no difference?

Maybe its the decibels in the 15 that make it better.

Y'know Moke, I can't think of a single 15" driver that has any appreciable output above 10KHz.

The biggie is personal preference though. Maybe fifteen or so years ago I would have agreed with you. I was using a bi-amp rig of four 12s and two 15s. All JBL K series drivers. It sounded wonderful. But then I was given an Acme B2 for my Christmas and birthday present. The lows out of that little cabinet were more than I ever got with my bi-amp rig. That setup was sold starting the next week and I ended up with three more B2 cabinets. I use a pair in a vertical stack to gig with and I've never looked back. Everyone who has ever heard the system are universal in their praise. The folks who have played through the system say it's the best amp they have ever played.

So if you are a 15 kinda guy, more power to you! Let each of us play though whatever gives us joy and be happy for the other guy who is enjoying a different choice.

In terms of speaker area, yes a 4x10 is somewhat less than double 1x15. HOWEVER, there are other factors that go into how loud a cab will be, like the sensitivity.

If you had a 15 with 102db sensitivity and 400w power handling, vs a 4x10 where each speaker is 90db, you'd get roughly the same SPL out of the 15 at 100w as you would from the 4x10 at 400w.

So in that case the 4x10 would have to have 1600w of power handling just to match the max SPL of the 15 (at 400w). That's just a theoretical example, but it shows that cone area is not everything.

If this image worked, those are my cabs... and one of my cats Sterling. I've since had to move them out of my living room because apparently my wife doesn't like looking at bass cabs nearly as much as I do.

I hate to rain on your parade, but I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't tell you that you really should have that bass on a stand! ;) That wood floor looks slippery; what if it fell over?

@ Paul

Thanks will check out the Acme range.

Played with 15s in early days, then moved to 4x 10's, now back enjoying a 15 again in small venues.

My old EV15 is starting to getting fuzzy but the cab is great so actually looking for a new modern faster 15 speaker to drop in.

Most new high end 15s out of my budget, eg Mark Bass and Ephiphani, but they do get a frequency range from 40Hz - 18Khz.

When I finally get paid for playing would ogle an Accugroove El Whappo - 29HZ -18Khz.

They still DO make a kick ass product. Just a few miles from where I live.

We Canadians like to dis Yorkville in a kinda humourous way but in reality they make good value for money products.

and that era of amps and cabs (blue rat fur) are essentially indestructible.

I always thought it was funny that the BM era (and some of the XM) were always labelled as 'sterile' while a higher end amp with similar lack of sound coloration would often be called 'transparent'

I do think they pricing on the current Traynor bass gear is a tad high. Nice stuff...but closer in price to Markbass and the like rather than their more traditional price point....just imho mind you....:bassist:

to the OP congrats on the cabs and welcome to TB!!

Is nothing sterile about a good 15.

Blue rats fur (no disrespect peavey) or whatever its about the sound.

Current university studies show that some 15s have frequency range 40hz - 18khz without a horn. Simple then. Modern 15s now have the same range as 4x10 but need less power......and its got a bigger cone.
