Bottoms_Up!

For the record, I don't love Raymond.

With my Rickenberger project now behind me, I've decided to fill the void with another headless mash-up. This time it'll be based on the classic Stingray aesthetic.

I've already found a Hohner B2B headless and transcribed the important dimensions into Illustrator. I discovered that these are great basses for these quirky projects as the neck is a bolt-on and the bridge is Steinberger licensed and SOLID. The best part is they can be found for short money!

The Stingray body shape had to be reduced in size and the classic pickguard shape will be altered slightly to accomodate the 23 fret neck and beefy bridge, but I think the overall Stingray vibe will remain.

I'll print these out on my digital press today and apply the body label to a nice slab of swamp ash.

Preliminary Plans:
  • Swamp ash body
  • Hohner maple neck with ebonized rosewood board
  • Steinberger Licensed bridge/tuning assy
  • Brand spankin' new active EMG-HB electronics
  • Flush-mounted (recessed) custom black plexi pickguard and boomerang electronics cover
  • Flush-mount neckplate
  • Bright blue-burst or Corvette yellow finish by Marty Bell (depending on the grain of the ash slab

ANOTHER ONE!?!?!?! You're killing me Bottoms_Up ;)

But seriously, I can't wait to see what you do with this one. I hate Ricks but I loved your Rick, and I love Stingrays. This could end quite well :hiding:
And as far as colour goes: Blue-Burst. There is no other option :bassist:

sounds heaps interesting! can you post a link to the rickenberger too pls?

Here ->

I'm a big fan of Steinie XM2's and have owned quite a few in my day. I still have a white one with black binding. just a wonderful instrument. Effortless to play and beastly sounding to boot.

I'm also a huge fan of the Rickenbacker design and lately I've been wondering how cool it would be if Stienie and Ric got together and produced an offspring. :D

The MM doesn't match the string spacing of the Steinie bridge. I would have to get a covered MM and at that point why not use the EMG? I dig the punchiness of EMGs.

I was basically going for a Steinberger XM2 with a Rick body shape for the Rickenberger project (note the control placement and alignment), and I think that's what I accomplished.

It's not a Stingray with a bridge tuning system, it's a Steinray. If you feel more comfortable with the EMG pickups, by all means go with them.

In the meantime, after the last build - which I enjoyed watching very much - I'm looking forward to seeing this one come together.

All the best,
DW
