My Number One

This is just a quick appreciation post for my number one, The Mutt, The Machine, The Howler.

Just two gorgeous chunks of Swamp Ash, sealed in Tru-Oil, mated to a mid-90’s Mexican Jazz neck, complete with cigarette stains on the headstock and chewed up where the strings clack off the bottom of the fretboard.

Gotoh 201 bridge.

She’s been through multiple electronics swaps, is currently loaded with an EMG Geezer.

just the best pal a guy could ask for. Let’s hear it for the number ones!

The '76 Grabber. I have played this bass at 99% of my gigs over the last 20 years and on all recordings excluding an LP we did in 2016.
It's all original except for a replacement scratch plate I just made. This thing growls, clanks, thuds, punches, just does everything right. The action is brilliant and neck is straight. She's in desperate need of a refret which I'll be looking into after next months tour.
This was the fist bass I bought with my own money when I turned 14 via eBay and had it imported from Germany. Paid by bank transfer, two things I probably wouldn't even consider doing these days :D

The date stamp on the body and neck is 2nd April 1976 - I was born on the same day 12 years later.

1988 Sabre. Strings and battery not original lol. But the mute pads are. Can’t even count how many Hours I’ve played it and still looks really good. The dent above the control plate is from a cymbal stand falling over after a gig at CBGB. This bass could tell lots of stories.

Awesome!

I don't have photos handy here but my number one just got unseated. It was my Elite Precision in Ice Blue Metallic. But I finally gigged the used EBMM Stingray I picked up off Craigslist and I think it has taken the title. I had only previously played it at very low practice space volumes and I had not gotten the action properly adjusted to my playing (previous owner had it about as low as it could possibly go and I got occasional fret buzz when the energy would come up). I was thinking "this is cool but I'm probably gonna sell it on down the road. I finally got around to tweaking the action and took it out on the job to play it goodbye and was blown away. The punch and clarity of the notes was superb, it growled wonderfully when I dug in and even gave me a certain amount of "mwah" that I never expected when moving around on the higher register stuff. I caught the drummer looking at me confused and asked him after the song and he said "I thought you had pulled you fretless out of your a** for a minute".
