I played bass in my high school jazz band. The keyboardist and I both played through the same Roland amp. It actually sounded pretty good at the time, but it definitely wasn’t ideal and it definitely was all the band could afford.
I remember the director taking a few of us to Lane Music to get some new gear for the school, including a new electric bass. I opted for an Ibanez SG 5 string. It was somewhere around $550 from what I can recall, and it sounded and played great compared to my EBMM StingRay that costed over twice as much. I can still remember the look the band director gave me when they rang it up, but I honestly thought it was a very good price for what the band was getting.
We ended up getting the bass, and it worked well for all the group, but I very quickly came to learn that these groups don’t have a ton of money to throw around. Donate what you can or help lead a fund raiser. I know we had one every year.
