My preamp journey

I ended up having to travel and be away from the house for a bit, and I have to travel again shortly, so not much time for preamps. I did get a chance to put the Super 400 thru it's paces, and it's a winner. I paired it with a Sushibox Finally to.adf some tube warmth and it's even better.

I love the Fender Tone Stack, I just wish it was more flexible. The graphic EQ makes a huge difference. It.alsonhas a lot of gain - not quite as much as the Super 300, but I have had no issues getting a fantastic OD. I like a little at all times, very subtle, and sometimes want to crank it, and this will do both. I can see it becoming my main preamp on the Bourbon St board.

A few dirt pedals have come and gone, but in particular I finally got a Free The Tone Bass Blaster. It's absolutely amazing. The OD is so smooth and natural, very full, no loss of bass, transparent, and very, very touch sensitive. An absolute winner.

After the holidays I'm going to finish putting things together and also put a bunch of stuff up for sale.

At some point I might even get some sound samples up.

Do you generally like your fuzz-distortion-O.D. before or after preamps?

Man you got me thinking about this FTTBB. Currently I've got two MBD-1's which I'm very satisfied with.

However, the tube warmth described of the FTT Bass Blaster has got me all warm and fuzzy inside.

I'm not a big heavy OD / distortion guy (although do use it when called for), so this may be something that could really satisfy that mild tubey OD goodness itch.

Gotta go. Just saw my wallet slinking off yonder. I better go grab it. :)

The BB isn't tube, but it is very warm. It's a great piece, I'm thinking about picking up another for my other board. It's by far my fave OD I've ever played thru.

It's kinda funny. I'm not a big OD guy myself, but I've found that a little bit goes a long way. I've ended up going from zero dirt pedals earlier this year to having picked up about 20. The tone grew on me, and now I love the touch sensitive and barely there OD.

Good luck and have fun.I've many questions but for now I'll be brief.I see two comps, how's that working for you?I been thinking of this and trying to learn more about it.
It's working out great! The Cali is used to help balance my various basses as well as for punch, sustain, and tone. The Becos also adds a little punch, but also some saturation and most importantly it acts as a limiter.

I finished wiring my middle board and made a few minor changes.

Tuner>Empress>Source Audio C4>Mutron iv>TC Electronics Brainwaves>Fairfield Barbershop>Bearfoot Queen Bee>Crazy Tubes Locomotive>Hotone Omni IR>AMT A Bass>Sushibox UA>Arkham Oracle. Underneath is a Lightningboy DI, which is fed from the second output of the Oracle.

Arriving tomorrow according to the postal tracking. Looking forward to trying it out. Everything I’ve heard so far seems very 80s-90s studio preamp. We’ll see.

Might be a little bit of a specific question, but has anyone here tried the CA Grizzly BOD and the EBS Valvedrive as tone thickeners? I know obviously these pedals are not the same but I know I’ve heard people use the Grizzly to add a bit of heft and harmonic richness to their tone(not necessarily overdrive) and the EBS is obviously well known for that as well. I’m just curious to see if anyone has made that specific comparison between these two…any feedback would be appreciated!

Those are to pedals I've always wanted to try. Thanks for asking!

Cool to hear the Super 400 is working out. I will for sure be getting one eventually.

I always thought I'd love to set it for med-low grind , but with some thump, and then find a neutral, vintage type boost or drive to push it into rocking/punchy overdrive..

Is there a drive pedal that you found really gelled with it as a natural overdrive? I've just always been smitten with the timbre , or way that the 400+ sat in the mix. But I've never wanted to carry one around..
