So, outside of age, the pickups are wound slightly differently?
Dosen't seem that big of an issue to me.

Yeah they are, and yeah, of course it doesn't seem big to you. People who follow Ric pickups definitely would care about late 80s vintage Hi-Gains. The OP was nice enough to sell them along so some vintage hound could utilize them.
RIC has a pretty wide range of pickups they have built and they vary based on vintage, specs, and changes to construction material or methods that all give them different personalities. I know this thread gave RRF a bad name but it has a really cool thread within the Bass Forum about the various Ric pickups that is quite informative if you actually decide you're interested.
its one things to say you dont like something but if you have to go any farther then that, you want more then to say you dont like it. i just dont get why people are taking this to heart. he has done a good job, if he took it somewhere then his own workshop would everyone been happy then?

no. the current one has a left handed headstock and completely different pickups=huge difference.
I can +1 this. Some people have gone too far. Not even half or three-quarters of the detractors have gone too far in my opinion, but those who have, REALLY have. And they're the ones that tend to do it over and over again.

I am interested, well, not much anymore, I was heavily interested one time.
These days, definatly not interested enough to visit RRF for any serious amount of time.
Just finished up the soldering and final fitting and now have this thing fully assembled. Here a few pics of it in all it's controversial glory.

I am quite pleased with the way it turned out and, even more importantly, the way it sounds. I've just run it direct into the board here in our studio and it sounds much closer to my taste than the original specs did.
I'll get some audio up or a youtube video for ya'll to check out tomorrow.

Yeah pauls never had binding , however he did have the horns shaved down. I have no idea why except know he prefered the weight of his hofner so maybe he tried this as a way to lighten it.
There's a few things I definatly would have done differently, but that is badass looking.
Thats probably where I got mixed up, I knew he had something shaved, and assumed it was the binding.
If you ever get tired of the way the pickguard and pickup surround look (you may not...) here's an idea for you, I did this after I got this bass with a huge, badly done P Bass rout in between the normal pickups.

I plan on switching out the black trc w/ a white one when I get around to buying one off the 'bay.
Other than that, it is exactly how I want it right now. I'm tempted to toy around with other pickguard colors/materials down the road but I'm keeping the white for now.
You can do this through RIC or trade with somebody. Black TRCs are more valuable usually.
I also think you should either make it one big pickguard or make the second one white also. Hope youre not sweating all the people telling you what to do with your bass. Basses are made to play. If it doesnt play the way you want it and you have the time/effort/energy/knowledge to change it so it plays the way you want then do it. Hows it sound now?

I too, understand it is a weight thing, back problems, or some such thing. He still uses his Ricks for recording.
