There it is in its fairly simplistic glory. Yamaha PB-1 -> Carvin DCM 1540L (bridged) -> LDS 15/6 fEarful.

The 1.0v sensitivity of the Carvin really makes it easy to drive. The Yammy can easily over power its input and it gets ear bleedingly loud pretty easily but sounds darn nice quiet too. I'm running around:

2 treble / 7 mids / 4 bass / +4 at 180hz. Makes for a really surprisingly warm tone with the pure solid state PB-1.

The pre is not ridiculously flexible, but it can dial in a little crunch if need be. I expect I will use pedals for any different sounds I need.

Yeah, I've been running it pretty hard for the couple days since I got it (many hours of jamming) and I must say I really, really like the PB-1. Definitely an awesome preamp. It disappoints me that the eq section is kinda inflexible, but the one semi-parametric mid is pretty fantastic. I wish EA made a 1u preamp :)

I think what I might do is pick up a DS24 from BBE and make some parametric eq settings on that to get some different tones.

The sounds the PB-1 can do are amazing, and the Carvin is super, super clean. I would definitely consider a DCM3000L if I were to want more juice for some ridiculous reason (or to run two 8 ohm cabs).

As it is I think the DCM1540L would do a good job of running two 8 ohm loads. It does not seem subject to the "PA watts are different than bass head watts in terms of apparent loudness" thing that people often bandy about. A single tap from this thing is definitely comparable to the loudness of my 1001 rb II.

+1 on the EA preamp.
I have an iAmp-600 that I tried to use as a preamp, but got way too much hum that I couldn't get around.
I just set and forget the PB-1 settings -- twiddled with it until I found what I thought was the punchiest setting that had decent midrange and whatever other EQing I need I do with my SR5 onboard preamp.
Works fine for me like that.
I'd love to try it with a better power amp (I'm using a 2nd-hand Yamaha CP2000 -- which is decent enough; I just wonder how others would work).

Compared to the two other power amps I have owned (Yamaha P5000s, Crown XLS602D), this Carvin really knocked my socks off for how crystal clear and punchy it was. Definitely a keeper and super impressive. I'd suggest considering a DCM2000L if you need more power at 4 ohms though :)

Yeah, I've been eyeballing that DCM2000L (also the forthcoming Peavey IPR series).

That all sounds reasonable, but regarding the last post, I thought the idea of this design was to not have a high frequency driver in the first place. :hmm:

It can be built either way depending on your tone goals.
A lot of bassists would never miss the HF driver using the 2-way design with the 18 Sound 6ND410.
For some bassists, distortion or overdrive can sometimes sound less harsh when not using a HF driver.

For those who want that upper sheen or 'air', they can go with a 3-way.

Options are good -- DSFDF.

That's the one thing I'm not sure about with getting a PA style cab like rp's. I'm still going to do it, but old Ampegs just have a sound, you know? But I must say I really liked the sound of one with an SVT head, so you never know.

I'd wager that an SVT head is inherently a lot more hi-fi sounding than its 8x10 cabinet.

Matching Super Valve Technology with a technically superior cab design may confer upon the venerable SVT an overdue justice.

Time and technology march on...
