My Sadowsky bass arrived today!

Is that the Sadowsky that was posted on BassGear a while back by a seller from Atlanta? If so, I checked out that bass a couple of months ago. It was in perfect shape and I was really tempted, but I have an ultra vintage jazz on order with Roger and I decided I could wait a little longer for it. Anyway, nice snag.

Ah geez, Jeff! I haven't thought about your spalt top in awhile and you have to go posting a photo, again. I guess I need to start figuring out which organ or appendage I'm going to have to sell to get one like yours. :)

I was hoping that yours and the few others were just special deals but if Roger has made that available as an option I will need to start budgeting, I guess.

Brother, I know just how you feel. I had never even seen one, in person, but from the photos and recommendations from others I started saving the funds. I know that I had to have one. I sold some stuff, saved and saved and voila, I was finally able to finally have one of my own. It took well over a year to come up with the funds. I don't regret it a bit.

Jeff, I hope that you do get yours, one day. :bassist:

- If I were to build a Jazz bass...100.1%

Final take:
- If you want a Jazz bass and have the funds--this is it!
- Doesn't replace anything I own, but emphasizes that "the standard" is all you need
- Easily, without a doubt, the better reference.

Welcome to the Sadowsky family.

You know, I really don't understand all this controversy over the blend control. It makes total perfect sense to me:

"I Want More Cut" ... turn the blend higher (clockwise -- like "turning up the volume") ...

"I Want Quieter" ... lower the blend control (counterclockwise) ...

Just my 2 cents ...

This is still one of the funnier foibles as far as bassists go IMO.


I've had a Zon with the supposedly backwards panpot since 1997. I've explained how I "fixed" it several times here on TB. Granted it is a long and involved process, requiring the removal and reinstallion of the knob (NOT THE POT). If you're very, very careful this might actually take a minute:

If the line on the knob seems to indicate that it's working backwards, take the knob off and reinstall it 180 degrees from where it originally was.

If this is done, when you rotate the line in the direction of the bridge pickup, it will favor the bridge pickup. When you rotate it in the direction of the neck pickup, that's right... it favors the neck pickup... which means it is now working "correctly". It's hard to believe that people have actually had pots rewired over this. Maybe this should be an FAQ?

For anyone who would still care to complain about it being backwards, reverse this procedure.


Next... what color screws sound best on a tortoise pickguard;)

My post about the knob was over a year ago; the newest owner of that bass revived the thread. Your fix is a simple one and could work for someone that looks at the blend control or favors the one bass; I don't do either. My standard procedure is to "rotate the balance control 10% CW from center detent".

My new Sadowsky has the balance pot wired as required. ;)

You're not the only one with the "problem", JR. I already knew you were resistant to this one;)

You don't have to favor one bass, you just need to play the one in your hands. My fix was for the vast majority of bassists who "do" look at their knobs at some point during ownership. I play a wide variety of basses and since there is no "standard" knob placement I rely on indicators to remind me of where I have my knobs set. What I jokingly call a "fix" is painfully simple.

My point was that people overlook the very simple fact that what they consider backwards does not require rewiring a pot. In fact the only reasons I could see for rewiring a pot is for someone who can't or won't look at the indicator (or has a knob without one), someone who really wants all of their indicators to line up (very important to some, completely unimportant to others) or maybe someone hears a difference based on a leftward rotation vs. right (can't rule that out).

Most people I talk to about this simply haven't figured out how simple it is to remedy.

Of course there are always exceptions;)

It's not a problem at all. But I didn't like having to always think through the steps, "This is the Sadowsky. It's not like the others. Look at the balance knob; it's the only knob wired correctly. Locate the balance indicator. Determine which way is true left. Turn indicator CW for rear pup." And if I would have implemented your fix I'd have to add another step, "Turn bass upside down because now the indicator is on the bottom." :rollno:

Maybe I'm getting old but I sure miss the good old days when left was this <-- way and right was this --> way. :D
