My Sadowsky bass arrived today!

As Jim said, the pop-out battery compartment was used for a short time. They were problematic & deceided to go back ot putting the battery in the cavity.

Thanks, man. I assumed by the condition it was a newer model. Did the former owner even take it out of the case? That thing is spotless.

I was in a similar boat - I was more into the "modern" designs like Tobias, Zon, Modulus, etc. A friend introduced me to Sadowsky and I was blown away by the tone, the workmanship and the playability. It's one purchase I have never regretted. I play my Fodera occasionally and it's a very nice instrument, but the Sadowsky is the one that gets most of the work.

I bought this fretless about a year ago. Fantastic instrument with a soft and beautiful fretless tone.

I've been jamming the Sadowsky all night. The facts:

- The closest thing I've owned to this Sadowsky in style and sound is a Lull Jazz bass
- The Lull and the Sadowsky have a low-end punch that NO other bass I've owned has
- The Lull is alder also, but the Sadowsky sounds better
- The Smith and Modulus basses have better action than the Sadowsky or Lull
- I A/B'd the Sadowsky with my new Modulus VJ
- Made the VJ sound like it was running on flat tires
- I'm thinking about seeking Sadowsky pups (or Ultra Jazz) for my Modulus VJ
- This Sadowsky is the best sounding bass [to me] I have ever owned
- All that's missing is the exoctic woods and non-traditional body styling (Sadowsky electronics + Ken Smith body)
- I wonder how a swamp ash and birds-eye maple Sadowsky will compare
- Almost everything about this bass is as it should be--for a Jazz bass.

You're beginning to make a believer out of me. I've only played one once for 5 minutes unplugged, but that's hardly a true workout. Next time I get my hands on one, I'm going to be a lot more open=minded.

Hmm...(thinking how long it would take to save the money and how do I explain a new bass to the lovely wife after just buying a Roscoe)

In the past, Roger only used quilted and flamed maple tops, if a top was ordered. I wanted spalted. He agreed only if he could locate a piece he thought was suitable. After about 6 months, he found two great pieces and I chose the one I liked best. It's one of the few flamed spalted tops I've seen.

He now offers spalt as an option, I believe.

Sadowsky originally used spalt tops as special order but now it's a regular option. I was in Roger's shop a few months ago and he had a whole bunch of spalt maple billets.

If you want to drive to Boca you can try out my two Sadowsky 4 strings:

jJazz, swamp ash body, quilt top, birdseye maple board

PJ4 spalt maple top, alder body, Brazilian RW board

well, that's quite the endorsement coming from a guy that has owned a few very nice basses.
my curiosity grows- i may have to try the Sad pickups and pre on something.. not quite ready to drop the big $$- i know, cheap bastard!!

Yes, I've owned quite a few good ones! This is not to say that my other basses
don't sound good too--they do. My Smith and Modulus basses are awesome but
I have to adjust to their tones. The Lakland and Eshenbaugh tones sound more at
home with me but they can't match the PERCUSSIVENESS of the Sadowsky.
Besides the Lull bass, the only other bass to equal the Sadowsky kick was my
Lakland USA Bob Gluab P-Bass.

I'm not implying that the Sadowsky is the best sounding
bass out there, but it is the one bass that comes closest
to MY opinion of what of what a good bass should sound like.

Sure thing. I know both of those places: the resort is very nice. I'm leaving that Saturday for vacation so Wed or Fri would be optimal (I have rehearsal Thursday night).

This is such an important point and can't be reiterated enough. We all have our own concepts of "best" and our opinions should ALWAYS be contemplated with that in mind. I try to make that very point on almost every post where I'm comparing Bass A to Bass B. Young players sometimes think in terms of absolutes. A big mistake. "Best" is a totally subjective term.
