I have had the exact same dilemma, and have unfortunately chosen wrong everytime.
If you were to give me a pick of a fender bass, and let's say that is the only choice I had, it would be a precision hands down, every single time.
I've never really liked jazz basses at all, from the narrow neck to the (IMO) midscoop with both pups on full volume....yuck!!!! The growl and deep, 'low-mid' infused bottom of a pbass just gets me goin.
Now, that being said, I am addicted to the playability of Roger's instruments, and the tone of that preamp just works every friggin time, regardless of room acoustics, genre of music, waning and waxing of the moon, etc. Its just that every metro I've either played or owned (3total) just doen't inspire me long term. Its the fact that they've all been J-style basses, when what I really want is that classic pbass thump with the benefit of Roger's world-class preamp.
My perfect sadowsky, if you will indulge me....
P5 with Pbody style, brazilian rosewood board with pbass stringspacing, black body and pickguard (or oly white/tortgrd),and an added j pickup with VTC. If I could get any where close to that in a Metro series, I'd be one step closer to gear Nirvana.
That being said, look for my UV70RW5 in the classifieds next week.
