I visited Roger Sadowsky's Brooklyn shop on September 12 of last year and spent several pleasant hours there, talking with him and playing his consistently excellent instruments. By the end of the day I'd put down a deposit on a pearl black 24-fret 5-string, ash body, soapbar pickups, ebony fingerboard, wide nut.
Nine months and two days later I got an email saying it was ready (they'd not been satisfied with the paint job and had sent it back to be redone). I paid the rest of $3675 (plus a couple sets of strings [$61 for both] and shipping [$40]) and it's the finest instrument I've ever owned (I currently also have a '60 P, a MIM P/J w/ Lindy Fralin pickups, an early Steinberger LS-2 bass, a Strat, a '64 Gibson B-25 acoustic guitar, and my grandmother's 1853 mandolin to compare it with). Plays magnificently, looks killer, "sounds fantastic" says a very discerning friend...hell, I'll bet it even tastes good.
As a final touch, they'd inadvertently forgotten to include the strings with the bass, so when I got the strings a few days later, there were three sets rather than the two I'd paid for.
