John, thanks for the clips and sharing your knowledge.

As a relative tube rolling noob- can you try and explain what difference using the three RCA 7025's made, versus just using one in the V1 position and leaving the stock tubes in V2 and V3?
I liked the way the 7025 sounded vs. the GE 5751 in your clip.

i no longer have the stock tubes for V2 & V3 so unfortunately i can't record any comparison sound clips, but with the RCA's in those positions, i noticed the tone opening up, sounding less veiled/stuffy and smoother, more transparent, more 3D and with a somewhat wider sound stage over the stock ones. to me, it just made it sound a bit more like a 100% tube head. NOS Amperex Bugle boys sounded absolutely great in V2 & V3 too, but for me the RCA's are my favorite in this amp.

well if it is indeed a one trick pony, it's one hell of a great trick. ;)

i suppose that the same people think an SVT is one too, but my SVT's are some of my favorite heads ever.

and personally, i'll take one great trick over a thousand mediocre ones any day.

Rolled in my nos tubes today. I got the GE5751 with amperex in V2 and Telefunken in V3. It did open it up alot, I was cutting back on the treble a smidgen in the bedroom, but this will be good live as I have been kicking up higher frequencies in that scenario. Gave a bit more of a bounce to the notes, but a clear bounce if that makes sense. i am going to give it a week or so with a live run then switch the V2 and V3 tubes and see what that sounds like, though I bet it is not enough to even worry about.
Great fun stuff this is, my first venture into tube rolling in 20+ years of playing!

actually, i think that that's a very good description and it makes total sense to me. quality NOS tubes in V2 & V3 basically gives it more depth and is less stuffy/constricted sounding.

I went back to the clip you posted in the tone control thread

It has an SVT first pass and STM second. The 7025 clip seems to resemble the SVT portion more than the old STM clip, which I believe is stock tubes. The old STM clip sounds more fluffy, for lack of a better term. I think you say cloudy.

Did you use your new 2x15? The old clip says it was 1x12 one way with a 2512. That might make a difference.

You guys make it sound tempting to try the 7025s, but it looks like they sell for $150 or so NOS. Not sure I'm up for that.

So I just realized I have these in a PA135 from around 1978 that have very little use on them. Hmmmm.

The big tubes I can see are Fender branded. It's from a pristine, virtually NOS all original amp. Not sure if I want to be the one that makes it not all original.

Will the STM 12ax7's work in the 7025 slots if I swap?

Well compared to the stock tubes, this amp can extend way more with some OCD tube work. This is my mix so far:

V1: NOS Jan 5751
V2: JJ ECC83S
V3: JJ ECC803S

So far seems like a nice balance. Rolling in the Jan 5751 really sweetened the amp up ( more open and natural sounding to my ear). The other two adjustments were just icing on the cake.

that sounds like a nice balance to me.
my UA 6176 uses JJ ECC803S's in it and they come that way from the factory. they're definitely my fave JJ 12AX7 and sound great. IMO, maybe even one of the best RI's made today. btw, Sovtek's 12AX7LPS sound really good too.

I stuck the ECC803S in V2 but when pushing the highs it had this "hairy twang" haha. Hard to explain, but just didn't sound right with my Sterling 5HH ( set flat with second setting closest to neck). However, while in the V3 position, not bad.

I've heard the Tung Sol 12AX7 were suppose to be nice. I think I'll order a few and roll them as well.

i always heard good things about the tung sols so i bought three of them and tried 'em. to me, they were nothing really special (YMMV), i like the JJ 803S and sovtek LPS's a lot more.
