my streamliner 900 V1 rolling experiments

every 5751 that i've tried in V1 gave the amp lower gain than a 12AX7, but if you have a 12AX7 that has a lower than normal transconductance rating than usual, it will affect the gain and the 'bloom' as well.

if you run the gain control at 9 o'clock, even with the gain switch clicked in, with a passive bass, you shouldn't have any preamp distortion.

I can dial out the overdrive but loose gain/volume/loudness in the process. It's like the signal is not have enough yet still very clean to get the most out of the power section. With my 9.0 I do not have this issue. I can get it way plenty loud enough, clean, tight, and super solid with just one 1x12 cab.

i have no problem getting a ton of power/level out of mine with a perfectly clean signal. i think that you might just be trying to get too much out of a single 12, since the STM 900 has ALOT more low end than a 9.0.

No that is not it. I normally play with my 9.0 LF Boost engaged and I would say it has more low end than the Streamliner all else being set flat on both amps. With the 9.0 into one cab it is chest pounding rock solid.

when you say being set 'flat', what exactly do you mean? all controls at noon, or flat on a frequency response RTA chart? i'm sure you kow that there's a huge difference. i've never played thru a shuttle 9.0 that was capable of having anywhere near the low end girth of a streamliner. even with the mids fully cut, the scoop switch in, and the bass boost in, every one that i've played thru was still very thin by comparison, and i know of no single 12" that can take 500 watts without distorting (farting), let alone thumping my chest. IMO, the only one that come close is a fearful 12/6 with a 3012LF but even then i think the 1212/6 is necessary for real thumping.

I mean controls at noon though the Shuttle is fairly flat sounding in this position. The Streamliner is far from flat set at noon.

Not sure what you are missing here but the 9.0 is capable of massive amounts of low end girth. Are you sure your not talking about a 6.0?

My Berg HT112ER handles it with no issues. No farting with either the Streamliner or 9.0.

The Streamliner works if I put a 5814 in V1 but with a 12AX7 in there it goes dirty before I need it to.

IMO, a 5751 should only be used in V1 since there's no reason to have a little less gain by using one in the eq circuit.

Does the tubes gain amount effect the V2, V3 slots as much as the V1? In other words, would a lower gain in V2 reduce bass, or is it more about the tubes "tone" capability. I thought I read in the other thread Agedhorse saying the eq controls were mostly independent from gain. Not exact words he used so I was just wondering about this.
Thanks

That is what I remember that the gain of tubes V2 and V3 do not affect the amount of EQ. However I can attest there is indeed performance differences with different tubes in there. Not affecting how EQ functions but how the amp sounds if that makes any sense. I think the best policy for V2 and V3 are good quality non micro-phonic tubes. The subtle differences are not going to be enough to warrant a whole lot of trial and error in my opinion.

(Very) Low gain tubes in V2 and V3 could negatively affect the function of the eq. I recommend 12AX7 class tubes in these positions.

i've only rolled 12AX7's in V2 and V3, which, IIRC, are basically its unity gain tone circuits, and noticed a definite improvement in tonal clarity with NOS tubes (RCA's Amperex etc), but they aren't as dramatic as changing the amp's characteristics like they by rolling tubes in V1 (like in most 100% tube preamps).

and yes, i'm familiar with the 9.0. it's front end (preamp) is much thinner/brighter than the streamliner's.

i've only heard a HT112ER once, and while i think it's a great cab, it's 350 watt thermal power handling capacity didn't put it in the 'chest thumping' category for me, but then again 99% of single 12" cabs don't either.

Yes the 9.0 is thinner/brighter/flatter (set flat) than the Streamliner but the Streamliner in no way has more low end than the 9.0 with the LF Boost engaged on the 9.0. I own both and have for some time. As to the Berg ER Cabs they are what some call a Super 12 Cab and yes they will flat out pummel, no disputing that.

This is very true no one can dispute that a "Super 12" "pummels." However there can be no end to debate concerning the definition of pummel, or what is being pummeled.

yup. i guess my definiton of pummeling is different. i'm just used to 810's, 2x15's or even a few 2x12's (as in a fearful112/6 or my whappo jr) only getting into that category. no single twelve has done it for me as of yet.

okay, here's the first two clips of the STM900 (pardon my simple Stone's riff). the bass is a 7 3/4lb p bass, duncan SPB-1 pickup (w/ both controls wide open) w/fneder 9050SL flats:

NOS GE 5751

NOS RCA 7025

now after listening back to them, IMO, they're pretty similar, but i actually now prefer the RCA 7025. it's a little tighter and brighter. to me, the 5751's bloom is a little bit nicer but the RCA's tone is a little more pleasing to me. plus, when pushed into clipping, i like its distortion better.
Nice clips.
I also prefer the tone of the RCA 7025.
Guess I'll be playing around with my Streamliner 600.
