my streamliner 900 V1 rolling experiments

now that i have two FaitalPro 15PR400's in my cab, i did a little more tube roliing today.

after many attempts, for V2 and V3 i couldn't beat the two NOS RCA 7025's so i continued rolling the V1 tube.

i tried the following tubes today:

NOS Mullard ECC83
NOS RCA 7025
NOS Philips/sylavania 7025
NOS GE 5751 (triple mica)
JJ ECC83S
JJ ECC803S
RI Tung Sol 12AX7
Sovtek 12AX7LPS
NOS Telefunken 12AX7


they all sounded very good (some better than others), but the winner for me is the NOS GE 5751 so that's what i'm going with, as many have found out, it tames the (sometimes 'cloudy') low end of an ST900, and feels more dynamic and transparent while playing thru it. at gig levels it also actually has a bit more highs than any of the 12AX7's with the possible exception of the philips. i'm now able to run the ST900's tone controls at 12 o'clock and it sounds great.

John, does this mean you started with the 5751 and liked it best, then ran the 7025 in V1 for a while and are now back to the 5751? Also, this is all in relation to you specifically pairing it with your new DIY 215, correct?

I'm going to experiment as well but given I run mine through a berg 610, I won't expect getting the same exact results you did - or necessarily have the same goals to begin with for that matter...

These threads are just a great way to get suggestions of where to start, and not a guide of where you will end up. Appreciate your time in sharing all this biznass with us.

yep. that's it exactly.
the 5751 in V1 was my first tube rolling experiment with it a few months ago (before i built my 2x15), and i loved what it did for it. for me, thy opened up it's dynamics, clarity, and tamed the wooliness that these heads can have with some cabs. after i built the 2x15 (w/3015's) i started rolling NOS RCA's in it and liked them in all three positions. then when i replaced the 3015's with the Faital 15PR400's, i went back to the 5751 and left the RCA's in V2 and V3.

What do you fellas recommend in the three tube slots of Streamliner 900 running with a Ampeg classic 610? Just got this head this week and really like it but always looking to make things better. The only problem is I noticed that I'm having a scratchy master volume from 0 to 3, that I have to get taken care of soon it drives me nuts having something brand new and having quality issues already.

GE or Phillips JAN NOS 5751 in V1, JJ 12AX7 in the other two. Scratchy pots seem to be the norm in these, I have a couple of them in mine.

Thanks I will give it try down the road , now v1 stands for the first slot closest to gain switch right then in order to v3 closest to master volume? really yours does it too, I just got it like three days ago that sucks. I emailed GB and I'll wait and see what kinda response I get.

This does seem to be common in the Genz line-I had it with my 9.2.Take the top off and spray the problem with some content cleaner.Should take care of it.(that was my response from Genz)

contact cleaner hey, You would think with todays tech that they wouldnt be having these issues on brand new heads. But thanks for the tip

I got mine from Brent Jessee-I forget his website but you could Google him.He took care of me.

I'm sure you know this already buy beware when buying tubes and buy from someone reputable.There is a ton of fakes out there.And a buddy of mine bought some NOS Tele's off of eBay that wrer supposed to test as new-he got them cheap,and they were......well cheap.

Regarding a few of the scratchy pots, first of all the only cleaner-lube to use is CAIG DeOxit F5. Other materials can damage controls beyond repair. Also, use only the tiniest amount possible, too much can also cause problems.

There are 2 different symptoms, the first is a noisy pot with no signal present. This is usually a bit of dust or oxide film on the element and is very rare. I haven't seen more than a couple on any Shuttle or Streamliner. If it doesn't respond to a tiny amount of F5, it will have to be replaced so call the factory for an RMA and we will get it taken care of for you.

The other symptom is noise or a grainy sound when adjusting the gain or volume controls while a signal is present. There will always be a slight amount of noise when adjusting because of the contact wipers sliding across the element, this is the instantaneous changes in gain as the contacts move across the surface and the resistance changes. Because of all the gain in these circuits, it's a little more audible in the SL than the Shuttles. Generally, this gets quieter as the amp is used, as the wiper fingers conform to the element track and microscopic bumps and tapers smooth out. Sometimes a tiny bit of F5 will help the process along.

There's a 3 year warranty on these amps, if the noise doesn't get better (or gets worse), all it takes is a phone call to Jeff and we will take care of it.

Cool-It was never a big deal to me and Ive experienced this with other amps too.I didnt know there was a specific cleaner to use though so thats good to know-just in case.And didnt mean to imply that it was common in a bad way-I meant common in that it wasnt a big deal to fix.

I have not noticed any issues with any of my Genz amps yet.... mine have been quiet

And i just got a New Contour 500 210T combo..... I have not used it on a gig yet.. I have been doing my other gigs with my larger gear. But once i get home will start to use it in my rehearsal area then an acoustic gig that i do at at times..
The thing is LOUD for its size. More when i get time.. I started a thread on it the other day...

Im really interested in that combo-the specs on it look perfect for what Id need for certain things.

The Streamliner continues to impress-and it sounds great paired with the Neox cabs.Id still love to try it with your Uber115 though.
