Double Bass My string journey documented (to be Continued)

I bought a flex deluxe D and G but I'm hesitant to throw them on. I've been trying to ignore the strings and it's been pretty nice. The spiros are still scratchy under the bow but I'm not practicing that too much right now.

What's the deal with mixing these. Flex deluxe with Spiro medium E and A. Use new spiros or dead spiros? If new then I may just wait till I change the spiros next to try the hybrid mix

Might be worth reviewing this short thread (there's a demo of this very same combo (new FDs + broken in medium Spiros):
Spirocore + ??

But to answer your question: maybe. But - are you asking because you're looking for something that sounds broken in out of the package?

The FDs will sound fine after a week (or sooner).

Not spiro bright but my luthier down here just put them on (I ordered through him and he bought the same to try on a new bass), and he said the section in the orchestra was looking at him cuz his sound was much brighter than his bass with Belcantos the week before.

I caved. The strings sound very nice and even out of the package which scares me. I have year old spiro mediums with brand new flex deluxe d/g. The arco is not scratchy as far as I can tell across the whole bass and they sound very close to the old spiros pizz to me, but i'm gonna have to wait to see how they age before committing.

Should never have tried arco Strings. Now spiros sound horrible under the bow (at least the high 2.) ahhhhhh

This is right where I am, and one of the reasons I don't bow much. Unlike some people, I feel like it's really a different instrument/animal, and I'm too much of a perfectionist to try to master two impossible tasks when I can focus on one impossible task instead. God willing and the creek don't rise, I'll set up a special bass for arco work when I retire and saw away happily until it's time to sleep the eternal sleep. That setup will involve strings that are not spirocores. :)

Sadly (luckily?) work doesn’t allow that. I’m getting too many calls to be a “jack of all trades”. I’ll be getting a 2nd bass soon that I like enough to set up with just spiros and maybe my carved will have a hybrid setup (flex and Spiro mix)
