Mystery ampeg? 215.

Hey ladies and gents, I recently scored this 215 cab for a song. Broken grill has an ampeg emblem, tolex was at about 30%, and was missing a speaker. So I decided to take it and fix her up. The one speaker inside was a celestion

. I am having a real rough time trying to figure out a model number or even if it's an ampeg.

any ideas or insights?

Not much specific. Somebody in the UK had that speaker in a Trace Elliot combo.

I don't remember Ampeg ever using Celestions, though I'm not the Ampeg guru some here are.

My guess is somebody, somewhere, blew the speakers and reloaded it with whatever they could get for cheap, or thought was a good investment at the time.

FWIW, google wanted to finish my search sentence as Celestion "bg-15s-200". Perhaps a later version of what you have with a beefier voice coil.

Have you heard it? How does it sound?

Well I'm starting to think the cab is an ampeg v6b, with half assed after market speakers.

(that's an after market grill obviously) probably gonna sell the celestion since it's going to be super hard to find a match, and research some nicer ones to put in that'll handle my sunn coliseum head.

Looking at it with the amp sitting on top of it, I'm not so sure that's a V4 cab at all. Looks more like an old Peavey with DIY cosmetics.

Try the Eminence Beta 15a or Delta 15a. They're usually a safe bet for old Ampeg cabs. It came with Eminences stock, with no upgrade speaker listed in the Ampeg book. If you wanted to get expensive with it and save weight, you could go Eminence 3015 non-LF's or Faital 15PR400, but the Beta or Delta will likely be closest to what came in them originally.

Update, and question time! So I cleaned it up, restained, repainted, built a new grill.

Been slowly shopping around for speakers and friend of mine (same guy who i bought the cab off of) recently came into a big batch of speakers. Including a pair of jbl d140s.
And there lies the question. I haven't had a chance to look at the speakers, and can't quite pinpoint the specs on them. I've seen everywhere from 75-150 watts. 8 ohms seems to be the consensus though. My head currently is a coliseum 300. If run these two parallel, added wattage, and 4 ohms. And i run it in pair with my ampeg 410 classic (500watts 8ohms), do i run the risk of blowing it if it is truly only 75 watts per speakers? Sorry if that is worded confusingly. Hah

You should be fine with the JBLs. When the V4B was new, they would have been considered a substantial upgrade to the original Eminences.
And yes, that is a V4B. Nice job on the resto!

Definitely a V6B cab based on the center vent there. The V4B was a folded horn style and much larger/deeper cab. The JBLs would probably work well. I think by the 70s when these cabs were sold they were offering altec speakers as the factory upgrade.

There was also a direct radiator, vented V4B cabinet. (Not only the horn variant.) I do not remember if it had center venting, though.

It looks earthy the way you've done it up with the stain. Very nice.

There seems to be a halo on the cab, it must sound heavenly.
