Mahogany is fairly soft and light weight, birch is quite hard and heavy.
Then it probably wasn't mahogany, but most of the ' hardwood' plywood here in the Netherlands has a reddish color that looks like mahogany but isn't.
I thought that the lighter color plywood that I used was either birch or poplar, in the past I used birch because it was lighter then the reddish plywood but still a fair amount harder / tougher then poplar (which is very light).
