Name A Song That Started Your Bass Interest.

Before I heard Ox, Jack Bruce, etc. I had heard the Beatles and knew I wanted to play music. I just had no idea that the guitars that they were holding were different. My brother suggested I learn the 'bass'. I asked him what that was and he played this for me. I was hooked instantly.

I was already playing guitar when I became somewhat obsessed with the bass line on "If You Want Me To Stay" by Sly & The Family Stone. Tried to replicate it with an early Boss octaver on my guitar, but it just wasn't happening. So I took the pedal back and bought a cheap J copy. It didn't even have a decal on the headstock! I played that through my guitar amp for about a year before it dawned on me that I was playing that godawful bass more than I was playing my MIA Strat. I decided it was time to talk to mom about a new musical endeavor!

As kid I used to ask every bass player I saw to play that theme song!!!:D That was one, that really had me wanting to play.

The number one song for me was "Thinking of You" by Sister Sledge. Strangely enough I had totally forgotten that this was the song that got it all started for me. I was 9 years old when this song came out, and I use to become entranced every time that the song came on. I would stare at the speakers to watch the woofers move on each note that Bernard Edwards played...the ghosts notes would freak me out!


About 3 years ago, the song came on the radio as I was driving. I had to pull over because that entrancing feeling came over me again...I remembered that this was THE song for me!

After that, music was no longer the same for me. (BTW, I totally HATE the newer versions of this song)

Mind you I grew up in the 70's...killer bass lines were EVERYWHERE (especially in REAL disco and Funk music)!!!!

That's easy: "Roundabout" by Yes. Of course, as a kid, I didn't know that there was a Clavinet doubling the bass part for most of the song - I just dug the tone and how it dominated the tune... I did my level best as a young player to play just like Chris Squire (except I played with my fingers)...

But then I discovered *funk* and never looked back.

I got into ELP and Yes a year or so before I decided to learn an instrument (well, other than saxophone), and that definitely influenced my choice. If I had to narrow it down, probably Roundabout.

When I was around 13-14 I listen to pretty much only metal, pretty narrow minded at the time and I actually thought that you couldn't really do much with bass so I was kinda leaning towards guitar(actually more into vocals). Now this might sound cliche for the bass community but the first time I heard "(Anesthesia)Pulling Teeth" By Cliff I couldn't believe it was a bass. I had no idea you could do those kinds of things. So I started looking into other songs with basslines that were interesting and it led me to Jazz and Funk and other types of music. That solo pretty much got me started and I haven't looked back. It really did open the door for me as to what could be done with a bass, as wella s opening the door to so many more types of music.

It worked out well because everyone and their mother plays guitar so I knew that I would always be needed in a band.
