How about a 1965 Hagstrom Coronado IV? IMO, it has an ennobled kind of klunkiness about it. Note the volume slider:

You should consider chambering that body and getting some Ultralight tuners; we all know that Thunderbirds are famous for the neck dive, and a double-neck one would neck dive more than a Warwick Thumb with a 20 pounds weight attached to the headstock.

Well, I'm gonna place the strap peg in between the necks to help with that. Add a giant strap to that, and I think I'll be fine. Though, I'm gonna route a TON out of it, and put on a home-made pickguard.

I'm not sure about clunky, but that bass answers the question "How do I design an instrument for maximum neck dive?"

The neck dive actually isn't bad. It's not anywhere near Jaguar Bass-level, anyway. It stays angled up or at least sideways if I'm moving around.

I must defend to the death the SBV series.

i solved the neck dive issue on both of my jag basses by using gotoh res-o-lite tuners on them. they hang perfect now.

Ive got one of the Guild B302's. Clunky, kind of uncomfortable, but if you work at it, it can get a pretty great vintage tone.

Well... as always, I heartily recommend that you give some serious consideration to the mighty Avalon. It has klunky in spades....

someone once told me my ibanez musician looked like a surfboard. i'm not sure how that rates on the clunky scale.

I had an original '67 Yammie bass.. horrid little 'toy like' thing, sounded thin and nasally, tiny little neck and a bridge that warped when you started tuning the strings!

My first 'vintage' bass.. Turned me right off the whole concept!
