name unknown materpiece albums

Gary Higgins - Red Hash - Folk/Acoustic

Was recorded in the late 60's early 70's while Gary was awaiting sentencing for..you guessed it! Possession of narcotics!
It's actually a superb album and one that I think would do everyone well to check out.

DALI'S DILEMMA - Manifesto for Futurism.
Progressive. AWESOME musicianship, too bad it was their one and only album. If you like "Images and Words" this album is for you. Great song writing and some really great bass work.

Also, SHADOW GALLERY - Carved in Stone.
Carl Cadden James is a great writer and solid bassist. Very well constructed power-prog.

And of Course HEDDA - "The Calm Before..." Power with progressive influences. I heard that the bassist is a very nice guy! :)

King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska Genre - Hard Rock

Hum - Downward Is Heavenward Genre - Alt / Emo / Math Rock

Jeff Buckley - Grace Genre: Rock. Yes, this record is in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, but so many people still don't have it!

The Gathering - Mandylion - Progressive Metal

passport is the band's name. albums: oceanliner, infinity machine ( but they are all good ) genre: jazz rock. passport is a german jazz rock studio band. the music is melodic and very well composed and the musicians are top notch. highlights would include juju man and morning sun ( both from infinity machine ) or bassride ( the solo bass workout from oceanliner ). well worth a listen.

band name: starcastle, albums: citadel or fountains of light, genre: prog rock. american prog rock band from the 70's that were called america's response to british prog rock. i don't know about that but they are a fine band with a great sound and great players including gary strater on bass.

Buckley is great, and unremmbered. Another Album I loved back then was called Tangerine Dream, that wasn't the Kraut/Electronica guys, but the album title by a British Psych band called Kaleidoscope (not the American band by the same name), The album didn't make this real clear and so when you go hunting for the album now a days you end up with the Krautrock band. Great piece of Psych tho and has been compared to Floyds early work.

Francesca Gagnon - Au Dela Des Couleurs - World-pop

The record is almost impossible to find, and when it does pop up on ebay it's super expensive. I was lucky to get mine for about $40 a few years ago. Francesca's voice is gut-wrenchingly expressive, and the songs are lush and perfectly arranged with a Quebec/French world sound.

LOL! Speaking of Nuno and Extreme...saw them on the first show of the most recent tour in NY and his 12 string was having issues. He had a hissy fit on stage and slammed it down on the ground. Pat Badger told him that he would take the guitar off his hands if he was gonna do that. A couple other incidents like that happened at this show. Don't mess with the virtuoso!


My 2 classics that are relatively unknown:

Altered State-DOS...Pink Floyd/Prog/Bluesy and incredible musicianship. All kinds of styles-check out "Where is Harrison Ford" for a nice bass solo. The album is great start to finish.

dumpstaphunk- "listen hear"- other worldly funk

jacob fred jazz odyssey - lil tae rides again - sort of electronic or ambient but still strong funk-ish grooves and experimental, couldent put it in any genre other than "amazing."

das vibenbass - animals & robots - dirty jazz. all of their stuff is masterpiece-quality, but this happens to be my favorite of them. one of my favorite things to listen too. very nice guys, too.

both gnarls barkley albums - psychedelic hip hop (?!?!) both phenomenal albums, sort of like hip hop with artistic integrity. (or something like that?)

mike frost & chuck alder - "the deep" - jazz. two six string bass players and a drummer playing standards and i think 2-3 originals. WILL blow your mind.

pimps of joytime - high steppin - funk / latin / rock - just a really well done record.

tea leaf green - seeds boxset.. - funky jam rock, like phish only more "real deal" if that makes sence. the box set is their first three albums, all masterpieces.

Hugh Hopper's bass style is unique and he contributes some great compositions.

I saw the Soft Machine live when they opened for Hendrix in Cleveland, Ohio. Their performance made me consider a new realm of music. I thought it was brilliant.

King Crimson - Red - Progressive

I know this is a fairly well known band but I think this album is the ONE that is at the intersection of rock, prog and modren jazz. Reverse fusion if you think about it. As important, groundbreaking and seminal an musical event in rock as Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and Bitches' Brew was in jazz, James Brown Live at the Apollo was in funk, Dylan going electric in folk, Johnny Cash's work in country, Ray Charles work in soul and r&b and RUN DMC's work with Anthrax was in rap and Public Enemy's work in hip hop.

Only years from now will this album be recognize for the big deal it is. Listen to the last track Starless and see if you look at music the same way again.

And BTW, the peak of John Wetton's career.
