Name your method for defeating GAS!

I bought the 2 basses I have wanted for the last 10 years. I was buying basses that were very nice and "similar" to my dream basses... but not my dream basses. Now that I have them I couldn't be happier. With all honesty I can say I will not buy any other electric basses as long as I have them. :)

I have a few words:

women

girlfriend

married

All GAS killers.

Dude, you're involved with the wrong women.

Mrs. Duke just laughs when I show up with a bass case. She asks, "Is that one coming or going?"

We just got back from Ireland. I offed a US Lakie to help contribute to the upcoming credit card bill and she got upset about it. "I don't want you selling basses to fund this..."

I am a very lucky man.

And no, she doesn't have any sisters. :p

Mostly indecision -- new bass? new amp? more lessons? PC upgrade? home studio stuff?

More lessons has been winning lately, which is both good and bad for GAS. My teacher shows me that I've got a long way to go before I can play better than my bass. He also shows me that my bass sounds *much* better with his amps than mine.

Appreciate what you have now and stop hoarding. After all, you can play only one bass at a time.:hmm:

I already had my GAS phase, from the early 80s to the end of the 90s (when I stopped playing altogether and sold almost all my gear.)

In my teens and 20s, I had much more leisure cash and was excited to try everything--actives, 5, 6 and 8-strings, acoustics, many different makes and models, etc.

I learned the valuable lesson that I am most at home and perfectly happy with a passive 4-banger and that, of all of those, the P suits me best.

Plus, I'm a family man now with children and am in the process of buying my first house.

Also, looking back, there were times I owned a half-dozen nice basses at once, but I realized that the period I was gigging and recording the most, I only had one bass (a Tokai P) and never felt the need for anything else.

This isn't to say that I don't suffer GAS; I just don't succumb to it and give in. I can't. And my years playing bass has shown me that I would probably just end up with way more instruments than I'd play regularly and I'd end up selling a bunch at a loss.

All that being said, I do still often ponder a hollowbody or a fretless, or something else new and flashy, but I think very hard before I make a purchase of anything to bring into my home.

I have a couple of chaep basses that get the job done just fine. What I need is an amp rig and a couple of pedals. Then I should be set.

Play more gigs, make more money, buy more gear, feel no guilt.

Sell stuff I don't use and buy more stuff I might use.

Pick up what I'm gassing for in a GC. Worked awesomely this week for a Jaguar bass. I was soooo sure I needed one of those. 5 minutes in my lap and gas is completely gone. It's the mexican P deluxe that I really needed. Right after I get my Stingray 5. Anyone wanna buy an amp? GK Neo 2001/212. $800. I've got it in the amp section for $900. Secret sale here.

Simple - I wait 2 weeks, and by then, I am on to another item of desire, and never end up making a purchase at all.

So far, this method has prevented me from purchasing a Rolex Submariner, another Pedulla, a Roscoe, a Benavente, more G&L L2500s, a good-quality Volvo 240 wagon to "play around with", a Fender '62 PBass Reissue, a Delta or Parker fountain pen, a variety of camera lenses, books that I'll never read, a Ken Smith bass (new), an antique pocket watch, assorted plastic model kits, a fretless bass, Hella horns for my car, and several other ridiculous items I don't really need.

I am currently lusting after a kit to make my own instrument & all the gear required to do inlay work. The GF just stares & smiles now, knowing I'll be on to something else in a few days.

imp

P.S. How thoroughly BADASS would that be - basses tricked out with all sorts of inlay? Invalid Link Removed

Who am I kidding - that's ridiculous - its just GAS.

I just look to see how far down the toilet my humble investments have gone. Other than that my day to day bills, and my wife keep the g.a.s. at bay. With the way the economy is going these days I feel lucky that I can buy new strings.
