JMJ or other P-lovers: Anyone tried this new sig model Fender P? I’ve been thinking about getting another P-something to have set up and ready to go tuned standard with rounds (a shocking idea, right?) and from the description this bass seems like it could be great for that right out of the box. (BAII bridge, Quarter Pound pups, slimmer “70s” neck shape.)

I’ve been liking a lot of these sub-$1,000 Japan-made Fender instruments lately, so I’m figuring this bass could either be really cool or… Not. I haven’t seen one in any shop around here yet.

I'm interested to know too - although these badboys are Mexican made, not MIJ. Even Geddy sig. production has been moved to the Mexico plant now.

Huh. Interesting about Mexico. I didn’t know that. My point I guess is that it seems like lately there are a lot of KILLER Fenders around for sub-$1,000, where years ago it seemed like if it was less than $2,500 new it was crapola.

I’ll have to read up on the other thread for sure. I brought it up around here because I feel like JMJ and some of the other regulars have very similar and sometimes strong Precision Bass opinions very similar to how I feel.

At first I thought, really? Asking JMJ about a Mexi fender but I tried one today and I have to say this is possibly the best fender P I've tried, it was impossibly light and the sound is amazing, I'm wondering how much is the bass and how much is the pickup. But I have tried quite a few vintage fenders and constantly picking up all the various new models searching for THAT P bass tone

Finish wise, it's not great it's sorta relic'd and it is a nitro finish but if you think most basses that are relic'ed are done to like 40 years of wear this is done to about 15 years, sorta like they started it and you've got to finish it, but the feel of the neck and the sound really are spectacular.

What I would like to know if Justin ever tries one is how close if at all it gets to his brown p bass or the white pino custom.

That said I just can't see a reason for Justin to try it, unless he's sat around one day at Fender bored and there is one hanging on the wall

Played one today- Liked the sound but it seemed slightly heavy and the one I played was "sticky" on the neck and body. Did not like the sticky feel one bit- Are they all like that??

On the sticky I'd say yeah a bit but it's Nitro thats sorta the way it is or goes etc. Weight the one I tried was really really light

Fun fact: JMJ once filled in, last minute, when Nate Mendall fell ill before a Foo concert. Maybe a festival and Justin was on the bill w Beck or Ima Robot. Would've been rad to see that.
