Agreed on all accounts. SDRE was a band far ahead of its time. I dont know if you guys ever checked out The Fire Theft, but that was good stuff too.

Nate Mendel Fender Signature

Agreed on all accounts. SDRE was a band far ahead of its time. I dont know if you guys ever checked out The Fire Theft, but that was good stuff too.
1. With an (alleged) nitro finish and Badass bridge, this bass sounds very close in essence to a Highway One.
2. Pickups can be changed.
3. PLEASE post a link to an article or video of Nate saying "Laklands sound better then Fender"...otherwise it seems like a fabrication stemming from pure bias.
4. Nobody cares if somebody thinks that a 'worn' instrument shows "lack of pride". Some folks worry far too much about the condition of other peoples basses and what stickers they slap on them.
5. I hope the truss rod access is at the heel and not the headstock.

In the Back and Forth Documentary, Nate played the Lakland during the album recording but I have only been seeing him play the Fender live lately.
I've seen him play Laklands and Fenders, Jazzes and Precisions. No matter what he uses, I'm glad he's getting a sig model - he deserves it. He's a great bass player, no two ways about it. One of my favorites.
It's funny how people look down on those who overplay, and when someone truly serves the song, and not their egos, they're still looked down on. Obviously, Mendel has chops - but Foo Fighters has three guitarists, and IMO he plays what needs to be played.

He has said in interviews that he has recorded every single album with the Foo Fighters with that red '71 P.
He also said that the fender CS has made him replicas of the bass that he tours with, and that actually sound better than his '71, ironically.
I love his bass playing, simple but very effective and hugely supportive. Great band!

I just picked up the new issue of Bass Player, and Nate Mendel is on the cover. There's a side note in the article about the upcoming Fender Nate Mendel signature Precision bass. It's based on his candy apple red 1971 Precision. The profile of the neck near the nut is on the slim side, and has a rosewood fingerboard. The bridge will either be a Bad Ass II or Fender's high mass bridge. The pickup is still TBD. It's going to be part of the roadworn series, and will be made in Mexico. It's due out some time next year.

seeing as nothing has been finalized on the bass, this probably ISNT it, but possibly one of the custom shop copies made for him

Err, have you seen the "Back and forth" rockumentary?
It was that old red P-Bass he used for everything the Foo Fighters did and he also used it during his Sunny day Real estate days.

He actually was asked about the copies the Fender Custom Shop made for him. His reply: "You know what? The copies actually sound better."
With which he meant the Fender Custom Shop ones, not his Laklands.
According to the magazine article he played his Bob Glaub Lakland on the new album and uses them for drop D tuning on tour but mostly plays his Fenders for the set. He said the Lakland sound worked best for that album.
